Media for the Chronically Ill

Welcome to my Holiday Gift Guide!

For some reason, as a chronically ill person, I love watching movies and reading books about people who are also sick. Maybe it's for the camaraderie and reminding me I am not alone. Maybe it's because I like to see how others respond to their illnesses. I'm not exactly sure. But these are some of my favorite books and movies about sick people. I hope the sick people in your life like them as well!

Books

Sometimes reading helps. I read books that are both about people living with diseases and help deal emotionally and spiritually with loss, illness, and questioning God. These are some I love.

"Strong at the Broken Places" tells the stories of five people living with very different chronic illnesses ranging from ALS to Crohn's to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The people are honest, bold, scared, courageous. Beautifully told and very encouraging!

"Blindsided" follows the author's 25 year battle with MS. In the midst of his deteriorating body, he has colon cancer thrown in. Wow.

Michael J. Fox's second and third books continue to describe his illness within the lenses of family, career, priorities, religion, and all other facets of life. Love these books! So encouraging! Fox's voice shows through in his writing, and his humor adds a reprieve from the dreariness of illness.

When I first got diagnosed, all I wanted to do was read the story of someone who got sick and continued to live well. For some reason, I was drawn to Michael J. Fox, even though Parkinson's is very different from lupus. Both of us were diagnosed at young ages though. His autobiography was and is one of the best books I've read, and provided great insight into living with an illness.

"Lucky Man" tells the story of his life as well as the story of his diagnosis and how he handled it. After I read this one, I read his other two as well, but this is my favorite! He is honest and bold.

Movies

These are some great movies that have ill people as main characters.

"RENT" is a movie musical made from the Broadway show. It is about a handful of bohemians living in New York City. Some are straight, some are gay, and many have AIDS. "Living with, not dying from, the disease." Love it! The music is awesome too!

"Griffin and Phoenix" is sort of a chick flick, but not really a romantic comedy. Two strangers meet and develop feelings for one another, then they discover that the other one is dying of cancer. There are some great lines, such as, "We collect pills." Very well done!

I love these types of books and movies, too. Perhaps it is because I find people who deal well with chronic illnesses to be incredibly inspirational. There is much to be learned from living well despite less than favorable circumstances. Often, it is a serious medical condition that allows an individual's true strength and beauty to shine through. It also helps those of us without a serious illness to focus more fully on gratitude and living compassionately. Wishing you a beautiful holiday season.
