A Medical Spa, or Day Spa?.

Having come from a family of self-proclamined "beauty queens", I have inadvertently become familiar with spa treatments such as laser hair removal, facials, and skin tightening. The question that many have is where to go for these services.

When you search in Google for these types of services, you will find an array of spas that offer them, but which ones are most suitable?

The answer depends upon which services you are looking for, and whether you care if the provider is a licensed medical professional, or not.

The Bottom Line

Services at day spas are NOT always performed under the supervision of a licensed medical professional. For this reason, the services offered at a day spa are typically limited to:

Facials
Massages
Body Treatments, and
Waxing

A medical spa, however, has one or more licensed medical professional that oversee and/or perform the services. So, in addition to the above services, medical spas may also offer:

Laser hair removal - lasers target the hair follicles which permanently inhibits future growth.

Laser (e.g., Aerolase®) or Radio-frequency (e.g., Exilis®) Skin Treatments - For skin discoloration removal, the laser or sound wave eliminates excessive melanin in the skin. For tightening, the energy targets collagen fibers which causes them to contract, and skin to tighten.

Botox® Injections - Botox® is a prescription drug and MUST be administered by a medical doctor. Botox® weakens the muscles in the forehead that cause wrinkles.

SmartLipo - This is a non-surgical form of liposuction that uses lasers to dissolve fatty tissue beneath thte skin.

Medical Spa - The Perfect Hybrid

For those that are asking, "Why not just have these services performed at a medical clinic", the answer is simple: the environment. A medical spa offers a relaxing and more aesthetic surrounding under which one can have these services performed.

Some medical spas even offer plastic surgery, such as tummy tucks and breast lifts. Again, the idea is to have the best of both worlds: the soothing environment, and a medical doctor. So, the next time you are seeking some "aesthetic medicine", have a look around in Google for medical spas near you!
