Android Smartphones - an emerging option for medical professionals
Android smartphones are an option for medical professionals who want to consolidate to a single device, instead of a phone and personal digital assistant. The Android operating system is Linux based and is developed by Google and other members of the Open Handset Alliance like HTC, Intel, Motorola, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Samsung, LG, and T-Mobile. The Android operating system is unique among Smartphones because it is available as open source. Android Smartphones are equipped with flash Ram (256MB), microSD slots for memory expansion (up to 16GB), megapixel cameras, and HVGA screens (480 X 320 pixels). Some models are equipped with touch screens, Bluetooth, accelerometers, GPS, keyboards, and other features. The T-Mobile G1 was released in October, 2008 and was the first Android powered Smartphone available in the USA.
