Medical Transcription Training at CareerStep - Review From Former Student

Considering medical transcription training? Most likely you have been spending a lot of time online researching medical transcription schools. Like most folks, you are working a full-time job and need to learn in your spare time. Of course, pursuing an online medical transcription degree allows you this much-needed convenience. After researching quite a few medical transcription schools, I decided CareerStep Medical Transcription was the most reputable school with a solid curriculum.

Will I Get Help? Is There a Live Person to Answer My Questions?

If you're anything like me you're probably wondering if an online school ships you the materials and you are on your own with nobody to answer your questions. I was pleasantly surprised at how accommodating the CareerStep staff was. Believe me, I called them a lot. There where times when I had difficulty with some of the assignments and received much needed help. They also encouraged me to push forward when my confidence was low.

What was the Curriculum Like?

A lot of material was covered. A common mistake that a lot of people have of medical transcription is that you learn some medical jargon and how to type fast. A dictated medical report requires you not only to have a good understanding and usage of medical terms but also to correctly use grammar. You will need to be familiar with anatomy, disease processes and pharmacology. I also had over 700 doctor dictated medical reports to transcribe in addition to what is mentioned above.

How Long Does it Take to Complete?

It depends on how many hours you want to put into it. Another factor is how fast you grasp it. I heard some people that work at it eight hours a day and can complete the course in four months. Personally it took me over a year since I had some personal issues to deal with.

First of all, most medical transcription jobs are done from home. It is truly a work from home position. I can tell you from my job searches that most companies knew of CareerStep and highly respected them. I was told many times from companies I applied with they knew when you completed a medical transcription degree with Careerstep, you were ready to work for them. Most companies require you have two years experience before applying to them.
