How Does A Medical Transcriptionist Know What To Charge Clients?
The most popular way to charge clients is per line (this seems to be the industry standard so you might want to keep that in mind). Charging per line usually works out best because then you are getting paid for what you type. As you get quicker your income will increase. This option seems to be favorable for both the transcriptionist (you) and the client (doctor).
If you decide that you do not want to charge per line another couple options you can consider are charging per character, per page or even per hour. It's entirely up to you and what you feel comfortable doing but you'll also want to do some research locally and see what your competition is doing. You'll be surprised at the information people are willing to give out if you are pleasant and explain you are starting out and wanting some information. Keep in mind that if someone doesn't want to share this info that you can't take it personally.
Whatever you decide it's important that you make your rates comparable to the competition. You don't want to charge too much or you'll risk not getting any clients but you don't want to charge too little because you time is valuable and the goal in running your medical transcription business is to be profitable.
