In a case of angular cheilitis where the cause of the infection is a fungus, the prescribed treatment includes a topical antifungal and steroids.One of the most widely prescribed treatments in such cases is Mycolog-II cream. It is a combination of a strong antifungal (Nystatin) and a steroid (Triamcinolone acetonide).
The way this cream acts is that the antifungal kills the fungus while the steroids help relieve the symptoms of angular cheilitis.
The downside of this cream is that, because the cream is applied near the mouth, it may come in contact with the food while eating. And because of that, the steroids that are contained in the cream may have some side effects on the body.

In a case of angular cheilitis where the origin of the infection is a bacteria. Then the right treatment will consist on using an antibiotic like miconazole gel.

After a while, saliva starts to accumulate in those folds and creates a moisturized environment that favors the infection. So, if you're using dentures, then you have to double check with your dentist to make sure they're fitting properly.
The other factor that causes the infection is the long exposure to the sun or the cold wind. This causes the lips to dry out and crack. And as a result, they become irritated.
When this happens, the person may start to lick the lips to reduce the irritation and bring a certain relief. What happens then is that the saliva only gives the fungus or the bacteria the moisturized environment it craves.
