When you are pregnant, there is not much medicine that you can take. Most commonly, doctors will tell you that Tylenol is the only medicine that you should take. What if Tylenol doesn't work for you or it doesn't treat the symptoms that you have, such as a cold or heartburn? There are other options out there beside Tylenol that are safe for pregnant women to take. After discussing this with my doctor, I decided to share the results with others who might by suffering from all kinds of different symptoms while being pregnant. I hope this lens will help other soon to be moms and put them a little bit more at ease through their pregnancy.

Why I wrote this lens

I am currently seven months pregnant and Tylenol has just about no effect on my what so ever. I decided, at one of my last appointments, to discuss some of the symptoms that I was having with my doctor. Heartburn, the common cold, and headaches were just making me feel awful. To my surprise, we discussed a number of medicines that can be taken while pregnant to relieve or get rid of these symptoms. Since most doctors only mention that Tylenol is the only thing to take while pregnant, I decided to share this medicine information with you. It is best before taking any medicine, especially while pregnant, to discuss it with your doctor. This is a list of medicines that could be an option for you to take.

Symptoms and What You Can Take for Them

Constipation - Metamucil, Colace, Senokot, or Miralax (*Note* If these medicines do not help, use the recommended dose of Milk of Magnesia, one dose only.

Headaches, Colds, Fever, Common Back Pain - Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol (Up to 8 per day).

Congestion or Sinus Problems - Claritin, Sudafed, Actifed, Benadryl, Tylenol Cold and Sinus.

Sore Throat - Chloraseptic Throat Spray or Lozenges, Sucrets Lozenges.

Cough and Congestion - Plain Robitussin.

Gas - Gavison.

Diarrhea - Kaopectate or Imodium, Avoid Lomotil.

Indigestion, Reflux, Heartburn - Carafate, Tagamet, Zantac, Pepcid AC, Axid, Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix, Nexium, Maalox, Mylanta II, Riopan. (*Note* Liquid antacids are more effective. Avoid Rolaids, Pepto-Bismol, and Prilosec. Also avoid antacids containing bicarbonates.)

Nausea - B6 (3 times a day).

Hemorrhoid Pain and Discomfort - Anusol, Preparation H, or Tucks pads, also can soak in a Epsom Salt twice daily.

Yeast Infection - Monistat Vaginal Cream or Gyne-Lotrimin (*Only use after the first three months of pregnancy*).

Insomnia - Tylenol PM

Medicines You Should Not Use During Pregnancy

This is a list of medicines that you should definitely not use during pregnancy.

Aspirin
Ibuprofen
Alcohol
Cigarettes
Caffeine
Saccharin
Tetracycline
Afrin Nasal Spray
Accutane

Important Note

Even though my doctor and I discussed that it is safe to use the medicines listed in this article, you should always discuss taking any medicines with your doctor before taking them, especially when pregnant. I hope this article offers helpful information to any pregnant woman who needs to find relief from their symptoms.
