What Is The Medicine Wheel

"There is no one traditional medicine wheel," ~~Loren Cruden writes in her book Compass of the Heart: Embodying Medicine Wheel Teachings, she writes "there is no consensus about what medicine wheel refers to."

Most land-based spiritual paths--whether of Native American, European, or other origin--have oriented spiritually to the "Six Powers" (the four Cardinal Directions, Earth, and Sky).

Cruden states that the medicine wheel is one way of naming and using that orientation.

"Early cultures throughout the world built rock structures which joined the landscape to the sky, some serving as calendars. Stonehenge in England is an example. Over 100 Medicine Wheels constructed by Native Americans have been found in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains of the United States and Canada. Their complete story is lost in the vastness of time."

This illuminating guide to the Native American ritual of the Medicine Wheel makes an ancient spiritual practice available to everyone. Roy Wilson, Cowlitz Chief and Spiritual Leader in Washington, combines Sun Bear's Zodiac (outer circle) and his own vision. The Four Pathways are used to experience the God within. It is important to note that all Pathways go through the Creator. which includes the Creator in the center, surrounded by seven Spirit Messengers: Cougar, Hawk, Coyote, Wolf, Bear, Raven, and Owl; the four Gatekeepers: Buffalo in the East, Bear in the South; Eagle in the West; and Cougar in the North; the twelve Spirit Helpers: Turkey, Turtle, and Owl on the East Pathway; Beaver, Ant, and Squirrel on the South Pathway; Butterfly, Bat, and Grouse on the West Pathway; and, Hawk, Goose, and Wolf on the North Pathway.

Order Compass of the Heart: Embodying Medicine Wheel Teachings

(Author) "In 1981, when I began to work with Lewis Sawaquat, a Native medicine man, one of the first (and few) things he asked me to..."

Arranged in the form of a medicine wheel, Compass of the Heart uses the teachings of the six directions-East, South, West, North, Sky, and Earth-as it explores what it means to be consciously engaged in the life that swirls around us each and every moment. Cruden discusses daily spiritual practices-meditation, work with chakras, even teaching children or gardening-as ways of maintaining a connectedness to truth through the ups and downs of experience. These practices deepen one's relationship with the Earth so that spiritual awareness occurs not just in rare moments of inspiration but as an integral and ongoing part of life itself. More than a guide, this is the perfect companion to those following the compass of their hearts toward a union of body, earth, and spirit.

Compass of the Heart: Embodying Medicine Wheel Teachings

"The medicine wheel is simply a way of orienting oneself spiritually. Each chapter includes her observations about all the spiritual aspects of that direction, as well as suggestions for rituals and exercises. She also includes information on using medicine wheels in conjunction with chakras."
~~The Midwest Book Review

I

nteraction with a medicine wheel offers many layers of understanding. The wheel is a map of life, and just as you can name, explore, and understand life from many different perspectives, you can work with a medicine wheel from a multitude of approaches, each one adding dimensions of experience and realization.

Ancient Philosophies for Use in Modern Day Life (Native American)

Medicine Wheel Ceramonies is a great introduction to the ancient Medicine Wheel Circle. The authors have done their homework here, and I was able to set up and execute my own circle very quickly while maintaining an understanding and appreciation for the traditional Medicine Circle. I immediatly felt the effects of this powerful medium. I use it weekly, and have expanded it to include family members. It is truly good medicine. The energy that that one can use for good is really powerful, and I recommend it to all those who wish to bring good medicine to their own lives, and this world in general.

Haskell University Medicine Wheel Earthwork
The Haskell Medicine Wheel Earthwork is south of the campus and was designed by Haskell professors, students, crop artist Stan Herd, and tribal elders, and dedicated in 1992 as a response to the 500th commemoration of the "Columbian Legacy." The creation of the Earthwork Medicine Wheel at Haskell is offered as a Native gift to all people of this planet and a powerful symbol of what we as peoples of the world must now learn.
