What Is The Medicine Wheel
Most land-based spiritual paths--whether of Native American, European, or other origin--have oriented spiritually to the "Six Powers" (the four Cardinal Directions, Earth, and Sky).
Cruden states that the medicine wheel is one way of naming and using that orientation.
"Early cultures throughout the world built rock structures which joined the landscape to the sky, some serving as calendars. Stonehenge in England is an example. Over 100 Medicine Wheels constructed by Native Americans have been found in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains of the United States and Canada. Their complete story is lost in the vastness of time."

Order Compass of the Heart: Embodying Medicine Wheel Teachings
Arranged in the form of a medicine wheel, Compass of the Heart uses the teachings of the six directions-East, South, West, North, Sky, and Earth-as it explores what it means to be consciously engaged in the life that swirls around us each and every moment. Cruden discusses daily spiritual practices-meditation, work with chakras, even teaching children or gardening-as ways of maintaining a connectedness to truth through the ups and downs of experience. These practices deepen one's relationship with the Earth so that spiritual awareness occurs not just in rare moments of inspiration but as an integral and ongoing part of life itself. More than a guide, this is the perfect companion to those following the compass of their hearts toward a union of body, earth, and spirit.

Compass of the Heart: Embodying Medicine Wheel Teachings
"The medicine wheel is simply a way of orienting oneself spiritually. Each chapter includes her observations about all the spiritual aspects of that direction, as well as suggestions for rituals and exercises. She also includes information on using medicine wheels in conjunction with chakras."

nteraction with a medicine wheel offers many layers of understanding. The wheel is a map of life, and just as you can name, explore, and understand life from many different perspectives, you can work with a medicine wheel from a multitude of approaches, each one adding dimensions of experience and realization.

- It's interesting to see how, historically, the Celtic people have been able to integrate so easily with the indian cultures present in America as they were forced from their homes and immigrated to the United States. Could it be because of their common heritage of reverence for the Earth and the constant flowing of energies their lives so initimatley integrate with wherever they go? the Druid and the Medicine Man holding the same reverance in common.....
