Old Fashioned Hoodoo Drugstore
OVER 45 YEARS AGO, Richard "Doc" Miller was just 12 years old when he started working with his uncle Dr. (Doc) Donald Miller at Miller's Rexall Drugs, a typical pharmacy located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. This was back when pharmacies were located on every corner in every neighborhood (almost), when the place to go to get what you wanted was the neighborhood drugstore. Miller's Rexall fit this profile perfectly; it was a family-friendly corner drugstore that, for folks living in the neighborhood, had everything they wanted and needed, and then some. The commodifcation of traditional Hoodoo charms and folk remedies began around the turn of the twentieth century and was in full force by the 1930s. Hoodoo drugstores and mail order spiritual doctors were common in the South. Any ingredient-roots, herbs, lodestones, curios, spiritual baths, botanicals and animal parts-could be purchased at any number of spiritual supply stores and mail order houses. Strong regulation of the industry by local, state, and federal authorities, however, caused most to go out of business. In addition, there was a general change of attitude in the 1970s among African Americans who began rejecting Hoodoo and rootwork. As a result, Hoodoo drugstores are not nearly as commonplace as before with only a handful of the old-timers still in existence. Miller's remains successful because both Doc and his uncle listened to their customers. As Doc tells it:
"The independent Pharmacy and retail business competed with other national chains in the downtown Atlanta area. First year sales covered all expenses and Donald was very happy. Being an astute businessman "Doc" (as he is lovingly called) realized that he could not compete with the chains for long and started looking for that special niche to make the store a success for the long haul. Over the ensuing years, Miller's has grown and prospered. The niche was simple to find. Just get the customer whatever they wanted, educate yourself about the product, and provide it at a reasonable price. That's it. That's how it worked. And that's how it's working today."
The Spider's Web
Doc wasn't necessarily a believer way back then, but after witnessing what a conjure woman could do with a mess of cobwebs, Doc's perspective on the world of folk medicine was radically altered. You see, that old conjure woman knew what she was doing.
What the old conjure woman did was not a miracle, it was just good old fashioned folk medicine. In fact, there is a large body of folklore that has yet to be seriously studied that suggests the silk from spider webs has clot inducing and antibiotic properties. In Jamaica for example, a traditional remedy uses spider webs for the purpose of preventing eye infection in newborns. Cobwebs are mixed with soot and applied as a poultice to infants' eyes. The same mixture of cobwebs and soot is also used to stop bleeding after childbirth (Parsons, 1923).
The old people know many such remedies and though they may not understand why the remedies work from a scientific standpoint, that doesn't matter. Because all that matters is that it works.
Amulets, Talismans and Charms
An Amulet is an object which has intrinsic power to give protection to its wearer, whereas a Talisman is specifically made to achieve a particular purpose. Amulets give protection by absorbing negative energies, while Talismans work by generating a positive force to achieve their objective.
