Medicine Wheels and Mandalas

Ranked #2,675 in Culture & Society, #59,374 overall

Universal Symbol of Wholeness

A Mandala is a concentric diagram having spiritual and ritual significance of Buddhism. In various spiritual traditions, mandalas may be used as focusing and spiritual teaching tools as an aid in meditation and trance induction. Similarly, Medicine wheels were traditionally sacred hoops made of stone by indigenous people for various astronomical, ritual, healing, and teaching purposes. Today, syncretic, hybridized uses of medicine wheels, magic circles, and mandala sacred technology are employed in New Age, Wiccan, Pagan and other spiritual discourse throughout the World.

This lens surveys various types of mandalas and medicine wheels, including their origins and uses.

Types of Mandalas

In Tibetan Buddhism, there are two types of mandalas: the types used in the Mandala Offering Ritual where the mandala represents the conventional universe, and the type that represents the dwelling place of a specific Buddha form or deity. In the former form, a mandala offering is a symbolic offering of the entire Universe. In the latter form, mandalas consist of an outer circular mandala and an inner square (or sometimes circular) mandala with an ornately decorated mandala palace placed at the center. Any part of the inner mandala can be occupied by Buddhist glyphs and symbols, as well as images of its associated deities.

Mandalas are commonly used by tantric Buddhists as an aid to meditation. More specifically, a Buddhist mandala is envisaged as a "sacred space," a Pure Buddha Realm and also as an abode of fully realized beings or deities.

In the Tibetan tradition, mandalas are made as thangkas (scroll-paintings), wall paintings, sand-drawings, and 3D models made of wood or metal. Mandalas are also constructed as 3 dimensional buildings.

The Illuminations of Hildegard of Bingen

Hildegard of Bingen (1098 - 17 September 1179), also known as Blessed Hildegard and Saint Hildegard, was a German abbess, artist, author, counselor, linguist, naturalist, scientist, philosopher, physician, herbalist, poet, visionary, and composer. One of her works, the Ordo Virtutum, has been called the first form, and possibly the origin, of opera.

From the time she was born, Hildegard reported seeing visions. Accounts of her visions were compiled into three books in which she first describes and then interprets them. The narrative of her visions were richly decorated under her direction. Many of the Illuminations of Hildegard von Bingen can be used as Mandalas, as are many of the images of esoteric Christianity.

The Medicine Wheel as Mandala

Native American Medicine Wheels, or sacred hoops, were constructed by laying stones in a particular pattern on the ground. Most medicine wheels follow the basic pattern of having a center of stone(s), and surrounding that is an outer ring of stones with "spokes", or lines of rocks radiating from the center.

Medicine wheels are constructed by certain indigenous peoples of North America for various astronomical, ritual, healing, and teaching purposes. The term "medicine" was applied because of the healing that was associated with the medicine wheel, and denotes that the sacred site and rock formations were of central importance and attributed with religious, hallowed, and spiritual significance.

Medicine Wheel Park

In 1992 at Valley City State University, Professor Joe Stickler and his students began work on Medicine Wheel Park. The project soon expanded beyond the walls of the classroom to involve the community. The Park features two solar calendars: A horizon calendar (the medicine wheel) and a meridian or noontime calendar. Other aspects of this unique 30-acre Park include Native American burial mounds, solar system model, the North Country National Scenic Trail and other woodland nature trials, several scenic overlooks of the Sheyenne River valley and Valley City, and a 3000 square foot perennial flower garden.
