Medieval Unit

Here are some ideas on how to make a fun and educational medieval unit.
  • Have your child/ students read age appropriate books both nonfiction and great literature about the medieval times.
  • Have the student notebook what they learn about the middle ages. A short summary on a notebooking page is a great way to assess whether your student understands the material.
  • Read aloud from a slightly harder fictional medieval book. Make sure it is appropriate for the age of the children listening. Some ideas of books you may want to consider are Robin Hood or King Arthur.
  • Allow children to color pictures of medieval times while they are listening to the read- aloud.
  • Make a project that shows learning like a lapbook, interactive notebook, diorama, or a 3-D map of the middle ages. Read the appropriate material that is needed to complete the projects.
  • Make a fun hands on activity. There are several ideas listed above to help.
  • Finish up the unit with a medieval feast! Cook up foods from the middle ages (see above) and if your children/ students have costumes they can wear, have them wear them. Have fun with it. You could even allow the children to take on different roles that you would see at a medieval feast, like nobles, servants, entertainers, guests, ect.
