Medina in Marrakesh, Morocco Is On My Bucket List

Ranked #6,251 in Travel & Places, #173,030 overall

I Want To Shop in the Medina, Marrakesh

Snake charmers, narrow passage ways, bright colors, merchant stalls, crowed streets, spices piled high, carpet, hot desert temperatures and begging children are all included in any definition I have seen of the Medina Marrakesh. So, what is the attraction to this southwestern Morocco city? Why am I wanting to visit the western edge of the Muslim world and see this North African nation?

I think I am attracted to the excitement, or maybe the historical significance. Cosmos tours called Marrakesh "the most fascinating of all Moroccan cities." the Medina Marrakech is a UNESCO World Heritage site built in the 11th century by the the Almoravids. Historically, Marrakesh was a political, economic and cultural center which influenced the Western Muslim world, from North Africa all the way to Andalusia. It has been under both French and Spanish rule and is now independent. Today you can see the contrast between the influence of the Muslim culture at prayer time as many workers turn to face Mecca, and the Western culture through modern hotels and nightclubs.

I have been challenged to write a bucket list - a list of 10 things I hope to do in my lifetime. Shopping in Marrakesh is definitely on the list.

Marrakesh or Marrakech - Which Way Do You Spell it?

The name is actually in Arabic letters, so both English spellings appear correct, with equal usage. I have used both on this page, remaining consistent with the source of my information.

Keep Marrakesh on the bucket list because:

DecoratingforEvents says:

Keep it, do it, write a lens with lots of pictures! LOL

sheilamarie says:

Sounds like an interesting place. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young -- that's where I first heard of it. Very exotic images in my mind.

Irenemaria says:

All the wonderful colours are reasons enough to keep it there.

Take it off the bucket list because:

Don't Forget a Tour Book

This is the one I want to take.

I am a huge fan of Lonely Planet tour books. As I haven't been to Morocco (yet), I have no personal knowledge of this book, but based on my past travels with Lonely Planet, this is the book I would take.

What's Stopping Me?

medina-marrakeshI ask this question of myself for each of the items on my bucket list, and once again the answer is only me. I am a bit intimidated by safety factors of any visit to Northern Africa, and certainly not looking forward to a flight halfway around the world. But the truth is, there is no valid reason that I have never been, other than it just hasn't moved itself high enough on my wish list to surpass the closer destinations.

I was in Marrakesh many years ago. And I mean many. If only I could go there now, I'd appreciate it so much more, I didn't really notice the beauty and splendour at the time,
