Forward by Dr. Terry Preston
Meditation and its benefits have been well documented and described for centuries - no, for millennia. Some form of meditation has been a part of every religion of humankind. Meditation has addressed spiritual and psychological well being. More recently, meditation has become an integral part of physical healing practices. Various writers have described meditation as a state of mind, as a method, as a series of practices, as a means for emotional control. Its benefits have been extolled in terms ranging from ways to control addictive behavior to ways to achieve ultimate enlightenment.
Both as a psychologist and as a seeker, I have experienced meditation in many forms. Descriptions as to how to meditate are multiple. At first in my search, I was confused by this multitude. Each body of teachings purports to have the correct method through which meditation can be achieved. In addition, descriptions of the goals of meditation are multiple.
So what exactly is meditation?
When I met Durga Ma, the answer to this question became clearer to me. As her disciple, I have continued to grow and learn through her guidance.
Durga Ma uniquely combines the analytical incisiveness of the scholar, the daring inquisitiveness of the experimenter and the quiet commitment of the devotee. In her many years of study and experience, she has come to understand the essence of meditation. As a teacher, Durga Ma is dedicated to nurturing and supporting the fulfillment of each individual with whom she works. Meditation is an integral part of this process.
In this book, DurgaMa makes meditation accessible to all, regardless of orientation or level of experience. The beginning chapters enrich your understanding of the nature of meditation. The middle chapters address empowerment through meditation, and the final chapters explore the relationship between meditation and the spiritual journey. Each chapter is organized to include both information and experience, and you move through the book according to your own needs and inclinations. The beginner and the expert alike will gain from the study of this book.
I wish that your exploration of this material will be a valuable and rewarding adjunct to your continuing journey.
