Let the Meditation Timer Do the Work so You Don't Have To!
One of the most difficult tasks for a beginner meditation student is to simply SIT. For someone just starting out 5 minutes can seem like an eternity! I remember constant "quick peeks" at the nearby clock to see if I had reached my time target. Unfortunately, this distracts from the point of the meditation practice which is to sit with a still, calm mind, or focusing on a given object (but not your clock!). Every time one thinks "Has it been 5 minutes?" he or she is being pulled away from the practice. Of course, it can be very helpful in later meditation stages to be able to overcome that distraction, but for the brand new student - fewer disturbances are helpful. One way to overcome this obstacle is to use a meditation timer. That way you can set the timer, sit comfortably and try to focus on calming the mind. When the timer goes off - you're done!
This lens will describe the alarms available for your meditation practice. These timers have the added benefit of soothing, non-disruptive chimes and gongs, rather than using the squawk or blaring of an alarm clock or egg timer.
Music Note Clock from Maverick Creations
Enso Meditation Clock
Extremely Valuable Digital Meditation Timer
I list the Enso Timer first because it is my personal favorite. I find this one so valuable that I own TWO! I have one at home for my meditation practice, then carry one in my bag of Yoga Teacher supplies for classes.
The Enso functions as a clock, alarm clock and a timer. The clock has several different gongs and chimes to choose from, so you are sure to find one you like. You can compile and save "routines" and mix and match chimes. For instance, you can program it to Chime twice every 5 minutes for 30 minutes and end with a Gong sound. It also has a second counter. There is a graphic that circles the face of the clock, one new spot each second until the circle is complete (60 seconds). There are big numbers on the face, so if you are on the other side of the meditation room you can still see the time. It comes with a carrying bag for portable use. Very easy to put in your carry-on when traveling.

Enso, which means circle in Japanese, symbolizes enlightenment, elegance, and the universe. Traditionally, the enso is painted with a single clockwise brushstroke, beginning and ending at the bottom. The central deplay feature of the Enso Clock is the painted circle that surrounds the screen and is gradually brushed onscreen as the timer progresses. This way, the user can glance at the Enso and see the relative amount of time that has elapsed, eliminating the distraction of focusing on the exact numerical time that remains.

The Zen Timepiece
Zen Alarm Clock and Mindfulness Gong from "Zen and Now"
This Zen Alarm is an absolutely gorgeous piece of art! Beautifully varnished hardwoods, polished singing bowl, and a simple face plate - it would look perfect on a mantle, bookcase or nightstand! It is a little big for a personal alter, but not too heavy so it can be moved from a table over to your meditation space.
This alarm clock is not portable. It is meant to be on display. The gong is much higher pitched than I expected from the look of the large singing bowl. I recommend going to the Zen and Now website to listen to the gong sound before purchasing. The controls are easy to use and the tone is very soothing.

Digital Zen Alarm Clock from 'Zen & Now'
This Zen Clock Will Let You Wake to the Sound of Tibetan Bells
This meditation alarm is made of wood with a closing lid for portability. The wood casing comes in gorgeous bamboo, solid walnut, solid maple, and solid hardwood with black lacquer finish. The display face comes in gold-color or silver-color finish with a decorative Snooze button. Beautiful for your nightstand, meditation room, or hotel room if you are traveling. This meditation alarm is available in two different tones - B and E. I recommend going to the Zen and Now website to listen to the tones before purchasing.
I tried this one out in the store and found that the weight and lid were appropriate for travel, but I would be extra careful with this piece. I would put it in my carry-on rather than risk it getting knocked around in checked luggage. The controls were easy to use, it's very pretty, and both B and E tones are soothing enough to not jar a person in meditation.

Pyramid Mindfulness Timer
Simplicity of Design - Meditation Alarm
This is a simple and elegant looking timer. Perfect for a nightstand, mantle, bookcase, or even on your personal alter. It is available in pale sycamore, natural cherry and a darker varnished color. The gong sound is deeper than the Zen and Now Singing Bowl Timepiece. I would not bring this with me on travel, but can easily be moved from room to room in a house.
By the way, "combi' stands for "combination." This timer will do both interval and duration based programs which are very easy to set.

Reiki Interval Timer
Time Reiki Healing Sessions Perfectly
This timer is very similar to the Pyramid Mindfulness Timer, but you can only set the time between intervals. It will chime for up to 90 minutes, so you will need to turn it off when you are done. f you want to meditate for 30 minutes you will have to count the intervals, so that is the downside of this timer. However, it is lovely for Reiki practitioners as it have the Reiki Symbol on the face. Perfect for a Reiki or Massage therapy room!

- There are types of meditation wherein you are taught to clear your mind and focus on one thing; most likely, it is your breathing. In other forms of meditation, you are asked to clear your mind and let yourself ?experience' your surroundings. Feel the wind blow over your skin slowly. Listen attentively to Mother Nature as she speaks through birds, wind, and water.
