Forget alcohol and drugs, true ever-lasting happiness is free, and found through meditation.
Meditation is the best thing you can do if you are interested in being happy, and I mean REALLY being happy.
Find true happiness, no matter what life throws at you. No matter if your whole life comes crashing down, you just sit there and smile knowingly! How is this possible? Because meditation connects you with the timeless realm which is constant, permanent, it is there for ever and ever. So when you see from this place, you see that all things change. Nothing in the world lasts, as the world is energy, in constant flux, in constant motion. Some things move fast, like thought and light. Some things move slow like mountains and oak trees. But all things are held in the unchanging, deathless state of permanent peace and this is what you can and will access if you learn to meditate.
Meditation will make your relationships easier:
How? Because you will be less attached to a mental position and therefore less prone to arguments. Moreover, you will more connected with the love inside you, so will not seek it from outside of you. This means you will be less needy, and when you don't need anyone, then you can be with someone because you want to be, and that is a much better place to have a relationship from.
Meditaiton will make you more successful!
How? Because meditation gives you clarity. Clarity is the ability to see things clearly, like shining a light on a subject within the darkness. It gives you space in your mind, to stand back and have a clearer perspective on your thoughts and ideas. It also gives you the ability to really focus, when you can concentrate the mind to single pointed consciousness then you have the ability to direct yourself wherever you choose to and not fall from distractions and temptations.
Meditation gives you energy.
So much of our energy is wasted in negative, conditioned thinking. In meditation, we make conscious what was unconscious, and then we begin to see how our thoughts were holding us back in negative patterns. So when we take conscious control of our mind, and begin to think more positively, not only will be happier but we will find an abundance of energy suddenly available to us, and a real imputus and drive to do the things we put off before due to apathy and procrastination.

Sounds fantasic, how do I meditate?
The beauty of meditation is in its simplicity
The first thing is to choose the location. When you are proficient, you can meditate anywhere, but when you are starting out you will want somewhere quiet, with minimum chance of interruptions (make sure youe mobile phone is on silent!). Nature is best.Sit comfortably with a straight spine. You can sit cross legged or in a chair, the main thing is to be comfortable but not slouching.
Close your eyes. With practice you can meditate with your eyes open, but when starting out it is best to close your eyes because there are less distractions and it is really the inner experience that meditation points to.
Become aware of your breath. Do not try to change it in any way. Simply observe the inhalation, followed by the exhalation. Focus the mind completely on the breath, really track it all the way into the body, and back out again.
Relaaaax! Begin to feel into your body. Notice the contact your sitting bones have with the earth/chair below you. This roots your attention into the body and anchors your attention into the present moment.
Begin to deepen your breath now, long and deep breaths, relax a little more.
Stay with feeling all around the body as you breathe consciously.
Become aware of the silence in the room, or the sounds of nature if you are in nature. Extend your hearing far far away. Allow a sense of space to arise within you. Include everything in your experience, all sounds, all throughts, all emotions, all sensations...accept it all as part of the uniquness of this moment.
Focus on the gap between your thoughts. This is the key.
Between the stream of your thoughts, there is always a gap. No matter how small, it is always there. Put your attention on the gap, and it will grow bigger, and bigger. Put your attention on the silence that all thoughts and sounds appear from, are surrounded by, and disappear back into.
To know this is to know meditation. To know meditation is to know your self. To know yourself is to be free!
Good luck!
