Vibration and Meditation
"All music is the earthly representative of heavenly music" - Plotinus (descendant of Plato)
This lens is about the connection between atoms, planets, music, meditation and your mind.
Don't let the scientific language put you off. Later you will learn how to meditate and put yourself literally in tune with the earth.
Modern science is rediscovering many of the truths taught by ancient sages. From heartbeats to the orbit of atomic particles and planets... All is vibration. Breathing, heartbeats, spring, the seasons, the tides, day, night, moon phases are all vibration patterns.
Vibration is energy that has regular repeating cycles, also known as periodicity, rhythm, beat, pulsation, oscillation. There are two main types of vibration: kinetic and electromagnetic.

Vibration is energy that has regular repeating cycles, also known as periodicity, rhythm, beat, pulsation, oscillation. There are two main types of vibration: kinetic and electromagnetic.
Electromagnetic Vibration
Radio waves, television waves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x rays, and gamma rays are all forms of electromagnetic energy . The difference between these is the frequency or rate of their vibration. Electromagnetic waves travel at the speed of light, have an unlimited range, and do not require a medium (such as air). Planets in orbit and soundwaves.
Sound is kinetic energy, or energy of motion. It travels much slower than electromagnetic energy, has a limited range, and requires a medium. But it is still a vibration. Humans can hear from about 20 cycles per second (Hertz or Hz) to 20,000 Hz. (a range of about 10 octaves). Many animals can hear much higher sounds that we call ultrasonic. A dog can hear frequencies as high as 50,000 hz, while the range of a bat or porpoise exceeds 100,000 hz.There are also lower frequencies that we can't hear as a tone, but that we can feel (such as earthquakes) or hear as rhythms. On a larger scale, planetary orbits and other cosmic motion are also forms of kinetic energy.
How does all of this apply to meditation? Keep reading and learn how to entrain to the frequency of the Earth for a deep meditation.
Entrainment- All Things Try To Harmonize
Entrainment or resonance is the universal striving for objects to vibrate at the same rate. If a note is played in the presence of a stringed instrument (such as a guitar) the unplayed string of the same pitch will also begin to vibrate.Remember the Memorex commercials where Ella Fitzgerald breaks a glass by singing a certain note? That too, is caused by entrainment.
Entrainment occurs in natural systems too. Aquatic life is tuned to the vibration of the moon and tides. Ecosystems are tuned to the cycles of the day, seasons, and the year. Women who work or live together begin often find their own monthly cycles are in synch.
All things in the cosmos strive to harmonize. When birds fly together in a flock, or fish swim together in a school, they turn and maneuver as one, even at high speeds.
By purposely entraining many vibrations together you get a powerful effect. This is why soldiers must break cadence when marching over a bridge, or they can cause the bridge to collapse. When light photons are in step it becomes a laser beam, powerful enough to burn holes through metal.
When we listen to music, our bodies attempt to harmonize with the notes. It is therefore important to choose that music wisely.
A video example of entrainment
These videos show rice on a metal plate being vibrated by soundwaves. The rice forms interesting patterns, some even resemble mandalas.

Earth Year Vibration
One very slow vibration that we are all familiar with is an Earth year. A Siderial Earth Year is one revolution of the earth around the sun measured against a frame of reference such as fixed stars. A siderial year is 365.256 days, or 365 days, 6 hours, 9 min, 9.7676 seconds. To enable us to hear the Earth Year pitch, we will raise it by using octaves.
Take any musical note (say the "A" above middle C, at 440 cycles per second) and double the pitch. You have now raised that note by an octave. It is still the same note name, in this case, it is still an "A", only higher pitched at a frequency of 880 cycles per second.
If we raised this pitch 32 octaves (i.e., doubled the frequency 32 times) it would now be in the range of human hearing. This new frequency is 136.10 Hz. You will not hear this frequency in most modern music, as it falls between C and C#.
The Earth Year Note as Meditation Music
I mentioned that the earth Year is not heard in modern music, it literally falls in the cracks of the piano... between C and C# (C sharp). According to mathematician Hans Cousto in his book "The Cosmic Octave", indigenous peoples all over the world chant or tune instruments to this tone. Tibetan Monks sometimes tune their meditation bells to it. In India, it is often the "drone" or continuous note played behind meditative music. Many there call it the primordial tone.
Notice that these tunings are done by intuition, and not using modern tuning forks or electronic tuners. It may be that some people who meditate often are just naturally in tune with this note. Or maybe its just coincidence...
I believe that this tone is excellent for meditating and is used on one of my favorite brainwave entrainment meditation recordings, the NeuroHarmonic Meditation Music Series. These excellent guided meditations use 12 different meditation techniques, including the Earth Year Frequency, binaural beats, isochronic tones, autogenics, progressive relaxation, and more.
They may possibly be the most powerful meditations available, but unlike some meditation programs that are expensive, NeuroHarmonic Meditations cost less than $15.00. NeuroHarmonic Meditations are available as mp3 downloads from ReelsMusic.com.
