What is The Mediterranean Diet?

The Mediterranean diet is not one diet or plan but a general healthy way of eating that those who live in the sun rich Mediterranean enjoy. That is plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, sunshine, fresh seafood and lots of sunshine. A whole new way of looking at our diet is what we need to focus on, a constant healthy diet rather than a diet to lose weight.

Now, more heart healthy and weight conscious individuals are looking to the Mediterranean diet to help them add the necessary life giving foods to their diet than ever before. Research statistics indicate the increasing demand for almost any Mediterranean cookbook is staggering.

The Mediterranean way of eating is healthy foods - fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, pulses and of course the base of their cooking - olive oil.

The European Comission Office, Eurostat produced some results showing the longevity of women. The report shows Spanish women as living the longest - 83,7 years, closely followed by French and Italian women with a life expectancy of 82,9 years. Mediterranean women live the longest, researchers say this is due to the beneficial cardio-vascular effects of their diet and especially to their use of olive oil.

Did you know that Spain produces around 44% of the world's olive oil?

Is it any wonder that it forms the basis of all their cooking, sweet and savoury alike.

Why Have Mediterranean Diet Plans Become This Popular So Fast?

The Mediterranean diet is under constant research from many universities, research institutes and even heart foundations in civilized countries around the world including the American Heart Foundation and Harvard University.

It is a favourite with medical practitioners and nutritionists and there's a lot of history to back-up the claims. Some have said that there is more backing this diet than any other known.

Olive Oil & The Mediterranean Diet

The history of olive oil, olive oil uses and olive oil facts are looked at very seriously because of the health benefits of olive oil and other related properties. There is even talk now that some shelf products in supermarkets may brandish a logo to identify that they belong to the traditional Mediterranean diet food groups. Beside the Mediterranean diet weight plan focus that is seemingly everywhere, it is now also known for its heart health properties and I've also heard it called the 'Mediterranean heart diet'.

Recently, people have been searching for subject matter based on the Mediterranean diet and diabetes, Arthrosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Peptic Ulcers, lower blood pressure and there are more breakthroughs being investigated as I write.
