Meet Lexie: The Terrier-Chihuahua Mix

Ranked #4,726 in Pets & Animals, #118,778 overall

Pet Adoption. Is it for you? It was a good choice for me! . . . . . . After a few behavior problems were corrected.

Hello Everyone. Greetings to you from Lexie, the Terrier-Chihuahua mix breed dog. She came to our family after, we adopted her from the Michigan Humane Society. She was six months old when we got her. Her sisters and brothers had all been adopted as pups, but Lexie was quite shy and needed some fostering to help socialize her. Her foster mom was sad to see this sweet pup go, but Lexie has flourished in our home.

Some adopted dogs have issues. Lexie was one of them. She is very smart, but also tremendously insecure.
Lexie has taught me a lot about dogs. She isn't my first dog, but every dog has their own personality.
I love my little pup! I want you to get to know her and love her like I do.

A POEM
Lexie's Walk

It took a while for Lexie to adjust to her new home. We had some issues. I dug into the Dog Whisperer books and found that he knows his dogs!
I walk her daily. It is good for both of us!

On walks and at home, I assert myself as the Alpha female.
It works!

Poem: Lexie's walk

Inspired by my favorite dog

Lexie's Walk

-

Lexie, my dog, likes to walk.

We go for one every day.

So I must not stop to talk,

We must proceed on our way.

 -

Other puppies we may meet.

We are ever so anxious.

We sniff not each others feet.

It's other parts that yank us.

 -

Little kids think she is sweet,

Because of her tiny size.

They wonder if they can meet,

I ask myself, is it wise?

 -

She is very insecure,

Though she is getting better.

Of temperament unsure

When strangers reach to pet her.

 -

Our daily walks keep her sane.

Without them she goes crazy.

And she will drive me insane

If I stay home and be lazy.

LexieWithPomPom

Is Lexie part cat? She is playing with a yarn pom pom that was left over from my knitting project.

Rescue dog adjusts to a new environment

Lexie accepting being held by kidsFirst I want to say that Lexie is a wonderful dog! We had a few challenges when we first brought her home though. One concern I had was about how she acted around children. My granddaughter was 4 years old when I brought Lexie home. When Lexie was around her, she was terrified. Even more terrified than she was of strangers. I kept a close eye on them and taught Gwen how to be gentle with her. Eventually Lexie was able to tolerate Gwen, but I was still cautious. Well, Gwen's mom, my daughter, gave birth to a baby boy. To help my daughter out, Lexie and I took Gwen with us to my cottage for a week. By the time we got back, Gwen and Lexie were best of friends! Gwen was able to carry Lexie around and Lexie no longer minded. Now Lexie gets very excited and happy any time Gwen and her brother come to visit. I cannot take credit for Lexie's change in attitude towards children. I give that credit all to my granddaughter!

Accidents Happen

Lexie had some house breaking issues

I don't know if she is trained now, or if it is me who is trained.
I make sure she goes outside several times a day. She isn't a noisy dog. She will just sit and stare at you. She will not bark at the door unless it is to come inside.

I can laugh about it now. Because she doesn't have accidents in the house any more. At the time, it was frustrating until I recognized her cues.
This has inspired me to write a poem.

When she wants to go out, she stands in the doorway looking at me until I notice her sitting there.

Poem: Lexie

Lexie, a dog so cute.
A little insecure,
As she stares, she stands mute
When signal should be clear.

If left alone outside
Bark to come in she will.
But with me at her side
Will look at me until. . .

I see her stand stark.
She is staring at me.
Why should she choose to bark?
She thinks, Can I not see?

That she needs to go out.
It is clear, isn't it?
So, to me she will pout.
If not noticed she'll sh*t

Say "Hi" to Lexie.

She can't read, but we will pass along the greeting!

Hi Lexie! I'm so glad you found a very good home where you are loved and well taken care of. We have a rescue fur kid too and wouldn't give her up for anything.

Hi! I turned out to be a very good dog. I got over my incredible shyness. My person says that if I didn't shed so much, I'd be the perfect dog! Thanks for dropping by!

Behavior problems with your dog?

I found the Dog Whisperer books very helpful

I highly recommend the books by Cesar Millan. I started off watching his show. They were good, but I wanted more. That is when I found his books. He doesn't teach you how to train your dog to do tricks. He teaches you how to be the one in control between you and your dog. This is a must read book for someone like me who needs advice. If your dog tugs at the leash and you have trouble on walks, read these books! If you have behavior problems, read his books. After reading these books, I feel in control. My walks are more enjoyable. Better yet, she no longer is having accidents in the house.

We Adopted Lexie from The Michigan Humane Society

If you live in Michigan, consider getting your next pet from them.

I looked on line at the Humane Society's website for a small dog. When the local Petsmart pet supply store held their adoption event, I was pleasantly surprised to find the cute little Lexie still available.

Lexie's Favorite Treat

My daughter picked these out for Lexie at the grocery store. They are rawhides that are shaped into little balls. She just loves to play with these before munching on them. She throws them up and then chases after them; they're a good rodent imitator...

Dingo 15-Pack Goof Balls, Small, 4.8-Ounce

Amazon Price: $6.89 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

We first got the four pack, but she loves them so much, that the value sized pack is used up quite fast! If your small dog is part terrier, they will be sure to love playing with their snack before devouring it.

Lexie loves her food.

Newman's Own Organics Adult Dog Food Formula, 12.5-Pound Bag

Amazon Price: $19.95 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

With all the concern over dog food being contaminated and making pets sick, we decieded to choose a brand we have always trusted and loved for ourselves. Newman's Own has never let us down. And Lexie loves it too!
