One Ordinary Day!
I have never had an interest in cats and never considered one as a pet. Then one ordinary summer day,it happened..........
A kitten was meowing in our neighbor's open yard. We eventually bought some cat food, brought it near her, and she ate it when we walked away. An orange tabby cat was kind of watching out for the kitten. We named the Tabby, Mother, and the kitten we called Baby. I just felt sorry for the kitten, thinking that she needed food. I never intended to really like them or grow to love them. Well, that one ordinary day started an extraordinary adventure!

Meet Moe and Baby
Mother AKA Moe and Baby are feral cats (see explanation below) and very cautious of humans. As time went on, they started to come into our yard and we put cushions out for them to relax on during the day. My husband was kind enough to make a cat house to shelter them and give them a place to sleep. They would not let us pet them, but they came by every morning for breakfast and every evening for dinner. They would leave us squirrel feet and bird parts as gifts. We decided to have them spayed and neutered at PAWS. PAWS Chicago Lurie Spay/Neuter Clinic supports TNR (trap, neuter, return) for ferals. This is a great no kill humane clinic. To our surprise, we learned that Mother is a he--so we decided to call him Moe. Baby is a girl.
We have known them for about 6 years (met them in summer 2005) and they are proving the "9 lives of a cat" thing. Before he was neutered, Moe would often come by with war wounds---once a terrible one to his face. They have come through rough times and rough weather. One winter, Moe hurt his leg and recuperated in our home for a few days. (We can't keep a cat because of allergies). I forgot to mention that he now lets us pet him and we can even pick him up when he feels like it! Baby still does not allow human contact.
Then, last fall (2010), Moe wasn't as consistent in coming around..... and then he stopped coming. Every day was sad. He was looking disoriented before this and we thought that maybe he had died. Several months later, I was missing him so much and talking to God about how I wished that I could see him one more time. Then, there he was...
sitting by our garage. What a reunion we had! Baby was jumping on him and my family and I made such a happy fuss over him. He came in for a bit. He looked good....and maybe even younger! We believe that he found a home.
Even though we miss him so much, we are grateful that as an older cat, he may now have a home. Living completely outdoors does take a toll on a cat. We hope that he will come by again one day,...and he already has! Now we wait for the next visit!
How Moe Got His Name!
Mother, Maurice Milhous, MOE!!!
My daughter and I thought it would be fun to give him a formal name and we came up with Maurice Milhous (Milhous is President Nixon's middle name) (we thought it went well with Maurice! and was different!)
His full formal name is Maurice Milhous Duke of Alley (pronounced ah-lee) !
I call him Moe, and sometimes affectionately call him MaMa.
The naming of cats is a difficult matter. It isn't just one of your holiday games. You may think at first I'm mad as a hatter. When I tell you a cat must have three different names... - T.S. Eliot
You Gotta Love Him!
Once there was a raccoon coming around and we were worried about the cats. Soon, we saw Moe chomping on the raccoon's tail! That type of thing was hard to get used to at first, but now I know that that is what feral cats do. They learn to survive anyway they can.
"One must love a cat on its own terms."
Paul Gray
Moe's Friend
There was another cat around, who may have been one of Baby's parents, but Baby chose to follow Moe.
Baby is such a scaredy cat towards humans. To this day, she will not let us pet her and she was a challenge to trap. She has a lovely meow and greets us each morning. What fun it is to see her trying to swat butterflies in summer! She can also be a tough one, and fends well for herself when necessary. She has learned much from Moe.
We love Baby Beatrice Duchess of Midway. (her fun formal name!)

Winter Care!
The cats will eat more when its colder out (they need the extra calories for warmth),and we make a little feeding station for them. Water will freeze and it has to be changed often. Their fur will grow thicker and the thicker it grows, the colder the winter! We had two cats in the house and they kept each other warm with their body heat. Even if cats do not like each other, when it is cold enough, they will come together to keep warm! Moe and Baby are friends, though. The cats also seek shelter under our neighbor's porch. Our kind neighbors are also fond of them.

More Info On Feral Cats
- What is a feral cat?
- This site does a good job explaining what a feral cat is.
- Questions about feral cats
- This site answers FAQ about feral cats.
- PAWS Chicago Lurie Spay/Neuter Clinic
- This is a great place in Chicago to help with the feral cat population.
- Only Natural Pet Store
- I have found some products here that help with feral cat care.
They sell holistic items for eye, ear, skin and flea care.
Trap Neuter Return (TNR)
Using special traps that we borrowed from PAWS, we caught the cats and took them to the clinic for neutering. They also received rabie shots and Moe had an infected paw that was treated. They had to recuperate for several days (in the traps), in our basement. Moe seemed to love the recuperation time and was really relaxed. Baby hated it and kept hissing at us.
When they were well enough, we released them in our yard and they both ran away. They returned the following day!
- TNR Trap Neuter Return
- When caring for a feral cat, Trap Neuter Return is a humane way to help.
Using a special trap, the cat is caught and brought to the clinic to be neutered and vaccinated. After a day or two of recovery, the cat is released to the area from which it was taken.
What Do You Think?

The Cats' House!
Moe's Message!
I think that he may be trying to explain to us what is going on in his life.
Reflections.....
Since we weren't able to have cats for indoor pets (due to allergies),we consider meeting Moe and Baby, God's creative way of giving us cats as outdoor pets!
They are certainly amazing creatures.
My husband has been very patient through the years as I can make a mess with cardboard boxes, duct tape, plastic and hundreds of staples!
He has made the cats a house and he also puts up with the cat clutter on our back porch. Thank You Dear!
We love the cats and thank God for watching over them.
Update........
Now that the weather is getting warmer, the neighbors and my family have been looking for Moe, thinking that he may want to be out and about a bit. Recently, while we were out, the neighbors spotted him! They told us that he was waiting at our door! (May, 2011) Ordinary Miracle
One day, you may meet and get to know a special cat! This song reminds me to keep appreciating simple and precious everyday happenings.

- What a great lens! Angel Blessed for a compelling story, all the great photos and an appealing topic that will help animals if the message gets out. I too am more of a dog fan these days, and I am looking into trap and release programs as a way to help cats without getting one ( and exposing us to our cat allergies.) Keep up the good work!

- The cats stole your heart! Some cats have such a good way of doing that! I went to the shelter to adopted a small dog, but there weren't any small ones and I ended up with a black kittens - thats how it all started for me. I am an avid TNR-er in my neighborhood in Chicago. I even wrote a lens about it. Kudos to you for helping the cats and thanks for sharing!

- We have two cats who have become indoor cats partly because of the feral cats that are in our area. Our cats are getting older and the fighting to protect themselves and their homes was getting hazardous to their health. We feel sorry for feral cats - in our community if you capture a feral the rule is euthanasia because the problem is so bad. We haven't seen as many recently but when one comes around our cats are at the windows announcing the invaders.

- What a precious heart you both have to love and care for these cats! I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story. They are both beautiful and I sincerely hope Moe has a wonderful home. It is hard on a kitty to survive the elements :) Hope you get a visit from him again soon!

- Trap Neuter Return (TNR) is a wonderful thing to do for feral cats. Sad, how a group of feral, and stray cats come into a neighborhood. Some find some kindness, but people move away, leaving behind the cats to multiply, fight, and search for food. Moe and Baby,
are precious ... sweet photos, and important message.

- I love the story of Moe and Baby. Ferals are near and dear to me as I have done TNR and have even taken a few younger ferals and was able to domesticate them and get indoor homes for them (2 are in my home). I loved everything about your lens especially the full names you gave Moe and Baby. An truly excellent lens. Blessed by an Angel. Bear hugs, Frankster

- I have also spayed and cared for feral cats. It is sad that so many animals are tossed away without thought. Perhaps one day the world will be a kinder place for the other creatures who exist here with us. I very much enjoyed your story.
