I'm 31 and just yesterday I found out I have melasma. I am a mother of 4 children. Seems like overnight I had these brown patches on both my cheeks, right between my eye brows and now over my lip. All of your tips are very helpful and now know I am not the only one.

I have had melasma since I was 19 which got much worse in pregnancy. I used Hydroquinine intially for about 5 years which did successfully bleach my skin however then I went onto get pigentation on the rest of my face except the bleached areas so it is all uneven. There is no doubht it works but I think it is too dangerous to continue using now. I have also had deep chemical peels and various other things. No lasers. I recently started looking at alternative treatement ( which I am not into at all but why not after 16 years!), and in one week I am seeing a difference! One week!!! I can't belive it and feel ike I have stumbled onto some secret that no-one knows about! I am using Apple Cider Vinegar twice a day and taking MSM supplements ( 2g) daily and I am also going to start taking Grapefruit Seed Extract Concentrate which is meant to work really well also. I noticed it was starting to lighten after 5 days of the MSM powder and it has been 7 days now. Can't wait to see what it looks like in a few month! Best thing is , it cost hardley anything!

I revisit your site often...thanks so much for the tips. I'm 38 and now have melasma after my pregnancy. It is the darker/shadow version on both sides of my upper lip (real nice) and 2 brownish spots on my cheeks. The brown spots are easier to fight off...the darker spots on my lip are a different story. I'm struggling with them, even during the winter. I use Neutrogena spf 60 baby sunblock w/ titanium dioxide daily, wear a hat, and shy away from the sun. I'm 100% Italian with olive skin, so I tan extremely easily/quickly. I'm using a 4% hydroquinone cream prescribed from the dermatologist, but I don't really think it's working. I'm going to a new dermatologist next month with hopes of finding a better bleaching product. I guess I'm just struggling to find a good routine. My daughter is 2 1/2 now, and of course we spend alot of time outside when the weather is nice. I look like an old lady at the park and the pool with my giant hat. Any updated info you have on good products would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks!

I'm 41 years old, olive skinned and have had melasma for probably ten years. It's gotten much worse in the last couple years and I've tried several different kinds of treatment over the years. It gets better in the winter and infinitely worse in the summer months, despite the fact that I use mineral sunscreen obsessively and always wear a hat. This winter I'm trying a multi-pronged approach and apply hydroquinone twice daily, a retina-A before bed and am getting a monthly 70% glycolic peel. The melasma is much, much better and I'm very happy with the results. Also, I live in Germany and haven't seen the sun in a few months so the results will be short-lived until the long, gorgeous summer days are here again. I'm probably the most photo-sensitive person I know so will have to keep up the strict regimen for as long as I live. Of course, I could always just let the melasma take over and pretend it's a whacky suntan...

I have had melasma for years, and my co-worker recommended the Lady Soma Renewal Serum (which helped her sister with her melasma). I have been using it now for around three weeks. My spots are gradually fading. One is almost gone.

I use it in the morning under sunscreen-I dab the product on the spots and gently rub it in.Then put sunscreen and my make up over it.It absorbs well, smells delicate-no burning or irritation. It is not an overnight miracle-but it is working.

You will see a difference within a week or so.If it continues working I believe my spots will be gone in a few months.
  • Paula Mar 10, 2012 @ 11:48 pm | delete
Just wanted to check if the product worked for you; did your melasma improved? Are you still using it. I'm looking for a good product that will improve my melasma, thanks for any help

I have it and found using an Led light (hand-held) every day has smoothed wrinkles, faded broken capillaries AND diminished the blotchiness. I also use a blue green copper serum with my light. They cost about $200 or so, and well worth it.

I spend a lot of time under the sun so it's no surprise to me (or to anyone close to me) that I've got melasma. I also used to be stubborn about applying sunblock, and now I'm paying the price. I'm aware there's no magic potion that will solve the problem, but my mom convinced me to try out a product she found online (it's called Whiterderm Spot Lightening Cream). She told me that it didn't have hydroquinone, so I gave in. So far, it's been good. I see a lightening of the spots (if you can call them that)

I am a 35 year old who has been dealing with melasma for 8yrs. It grew after I had my twins 4yrs ago. Nothing really works. I work for a facial plastic surgeon and the best you can do it use expensive skin lightener regimens (for the rest of your life!) (I use Obagi-it lightens, but will never go away & def cannot stop using or will come back just as dark) and wear sunblock or hats or stay out of the sun completely! There are no laser treatments for this condition. It's terrible when you can't cover up your face. I haven't even found any makeup that will hide it naturally. Good thing I love my kids ,as everyday I look at myself in the mirror it reminds me of how where my beauty went:(

I'm 41 years old and i remember exactly when this started! I took Depro Vera (sp) one 3 month shot and i noticed 1/2 way through it looked like i had a moustache it was on either side above the corners of my mouth..i was so upset i asked the doctor and he said yes it was caused by the shot...now it is all over my face..that was when i was around 29 or so...i'm so upset because i was never big on wearing alot of makeup and now i don't have much of a choice..in the last 2 yrs it has almost covered the entire left side of my face .. across my forehead and below my lips now..i don't see the original markings...they faded..oddly enough they were easier to hide then my entire face...i have lyme and fibro also

i agree with putting on sunscreen regularly. just want to share an experience also. my mom had been having melasma for almost 10 years (i'm not really sure for how long but i think it's about 10 years). she was looking for products to lighten or even out the discolored areas. i am using a skin lightening cream for my dark spots and freckles. she tried it on her melasma for one week until she began noticing the improvement. her melasma now is lighter than before. i've been nagging her about the sunscreen 'cause she always forgets. lol. sunscreen won't get rid of the melasma but it'll keep the patches from spreading.

Try taking MSM (pure sulfur piwdre) every day plus Zinc & Selenium supplements as anti-oxidants. I also look for skin care products (and hair products) containg Magnesium Sulfate, as the sulfur applied topically & orally will suppress copper in the body which creates hyperinflammatory response.

i am a 36 year old and have been dealing with melasma for about 4 years or so. within the past month it has covered my entire face. i look a lot darker than the rest of my body and people are noticing. i went to see my dermatologist today and he confirmed what i knew. its worse. i have been exfoliating and using retin a. but the one thing i was not consistent with the past 2-3months was sunscreen. i am so disappointed with myself because i did this to myself even though i know better. so please wear your sunscreen!!!
  • RUTH Nov 9, 2010 @ 5:59 am | delete
It's believed that some skin whitening lotion contains substances such as acids, mercury, and exfoliants that bleach, peel and scrub the outer epidermis . Mercury is dangerous heavy metal and it's use in skincare products is problematic if not irresponsible. The major cosmetic companies state that it is not harmful since it does not go inside the skin. Either way, I'm not going to use anything with mercury in it... better safe than sorry.

Bleaches, peels and exfoliants are tend to be a bit caustic, however, the discoloration that they cause can become a recurring event. It's been determined that repeated inflammation of this type can contribute to the development of rosacea and even DNA degeneration. DNA degeneration is thought to contribute to the development of wrinkles or cancer. try to used DALFOUR cream. the only cream i find so Amazing!!!best for all kinds of problems of skin problems..

I am a 44 y o asian guy and have had melasma for almost 2 years now.Tried everything - ipl, laser and triluma, they worked for a while but the melasma came back, worse now with hypopigmentation, it seems that the laser depigmented the area where I applied triluma. Now I m trying Lumixyl, already a month and I can see some improvement. I will continue with Lumixyl since good result can only be seen after 2 months (as claimed in the brochure). I m also taking grapefruit seed extract, MSM, vitamin C and pine bark extract.I know my skin will never be back to normal but at least I want to go out without having to wear concealer, which as a guy I hate having to do so.

It was nice to read all of your comments. I am 34 and have had melasma since age 26 and it was not from pregnancy or the pill. This condition definitely changed my self esteem and comfort level around others - especially in daylight. Deep down, I hate people looking at my face. I feel almost shameful about a condition that I have no control over and probably isn't even as bad as I make it out to be. Like many, I am also preoccupied with trying to find ways to treat it. I am currently trying a series of peels. After 2 micropeels, I can't say that I'm overly satisfied with the result but may continue with a couple more, just to say I gave it a good try. I too have tried skin lighting creams and they are not really effective. Good luck to everyone and thanks for the tips.

    Hi RLN,

I can't tell you that I can help your melasma, BUT, if you've ever heard of a thing called Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) or 'Tapping', this would be a very useful tool for you that will help how you feel about it and yourself, so that you are no longer affected by it on an emotional level (i.e. poor self esteem, wanting to hide and being uncomfortable etc.) Google it, and have a practitioner help you out with it. Depending on where you are I can recommend someone for you.

I agree, that only if you suffer with this do you really understand how much it affects your life...if you let it. But I also think we see it more than our loved ones do, as with cellulite or anything else. I have suffered with melasma for over four years. I first had a freckle on the side of my nose that kept getting bigger. I decided to have an IPL to get "rid of sun damage", and that was the biggest mistake of my life. All of a sudden I had much darker splotches on both sides of my nose and my upper lip. Undeniably IPLs made my melasma worse. I had a spot test at a later date on a little spot of melasma and it made it shades darker. What I believe is that we have to focus on treating the cause instead of the symptom. This means supplementing internally with Grapefruit Seed Extract, Vitamin C, MSM, and a whole host of antioxidants to fight against toxins in your body. Also focus on decreasing stress in your life, especially over your melasma. I had a revelation this week, I realized that because my melasma is hormone driven, I should not be eating any dairy. Milk, especially in the USA has extremely high hormone levels. Since cows are milked 300 days of the year most of the time while they are in late stages of pregnancy, hormone levels are over 33 percent higher than in other countries that don't. So I believe those hormones are directly contributing to my brown spots. What helps blend my melasma is this amazing concealer by M.A.C. that actually contains 35 SPF in it. I buy it in two different shades to lighten and darken where necessary. It is the only thing that covers my spots and does not make them more noticeable like some others do. I have a wide brimmed sun hat that rolls up and I keep it in my purse at all times. And if I am out in the sun by the pool (I have two little ones that have to have a life as well), I try to have an ice bucket with little spa towels to cool down my face. Also, I use Jergen's self tanning cream, I lightly apply it around the corners of the bottom of my nose or wherever my skin is noticeably lighter to blend it away. This is all working for me, my melasma has lightened by 50% and is breaking up. Hope it helps you all as well!!!

I am 35 years old and was on the pill, I have two children and have been dealing with Melasma for quite a few years now. I have it between my brows extending up to the hairline, on the sides of my eyes, on my cheeks and the worst spot is on my top lip, looks like a moustache. I also deal with Acne and since I started dealing with this problem I have had a change in my Acne in which it now scars even darker. I have tried creams, and taking supplements and even considered profractional lazer treatments, but chickened out after researching the down side of the procedure (not to mention the cost), which may include scarring or the Melasma returning even darker. I hide as much as I can and avoid get togethers it has caused depression to become part of my life, people who do not have this problem do not know what this condition makes you feel like, they just do not understand. I will continue to search for something to help. I know there is no magic eraser to make it disappear, but I am open to any suggestions...thank you...

I had the same thing I did a chemical peel on my face twice and it removed my Melasma and my freckles its been the best thing ever. I won't lie it does hurt and it burns and its expensive. But I have also discovered that you can get Glycolic Acide 70% on Amazon for 20.00 I heard it works I am going to try that just to keep touching up. My doctor told me to get off the pill and choose a different method of birth control as long as your on the pill you will continue to get Melasma....he recommended the IUD, which I will be getting next month. I also use Hydroquione excellent face crea. Hope this helps. Good luck.
  • Jeannette Sep 6, 2010 @ 7:57 pm | delete
Be careful not to get the IUD called the Mirena as it has a lot of hormones that will make it a lot worse. IUD was great until my gyno inserted the Mirena without any indication of melasma being a side effect - nice!! Anyway, I have also tried everything except invasive efforts, but after reading all your responses on this it makes me question if I should try laser or not... I am going to keep researching and will keep you updated. Thanks for the info - ps to get it to the best it has been I used the triphasic whitening system from Nuskin and it really worked to help lighten, but we are never satisfied with better are we. I want my skin back, where I didn't need to spend 20 minutes trying to cover it up and four different cosmetic products to conceal and even out my skin...poo, I wish I could go au natural again!

I also have Melasma and I hate it! I had lovely even pale skin until I was about 27 when the Melasma started to creep in on my forehead, upper lip and top of my cheekbones. I have been using Fade out which has pretty much got rid of it on my upper lip and faded it a little else where but I can still see it and without make-up it is really obvious which gets me down as I think it makes me look older. I think mine was caused by sun damage although I do also take the pill but although I do not sunbathe I had got caught in the sun when gardening and I had forgotten to put anything on my skin and now at the age of 31 I am fed up of it. I don't really want to use hydoquinone as I have sensitive skin and when I tried a skin peel it brought me out in nasty acne for months afterwards so I am currently sticking to Fade Out and I generally stay out of the sun:(.

i had some sun spots on my cheeks before i got pregnant with my second child but when i got pregnant it took over my face. i have large donuts on my cheeks, a large spot between my brow that continues onto my nose. large spots on my brow that continue onto the sides of my face and my lip is the worst because the spots are darker and look like a mustache. i spent nearly a $1000 dollars on laser treatments but they actually made them worse because i have a dark skin tone, they got darker and spread. my son is now 1 and they look worse then when i was pregnant. does anyone know anything about the pills you take internally from overseas that are suppose to be natural and safe. i am turnin into an introvert because of my face and i'm tired of looking in the mirror. thanks

    Hello Sara,

Your article is really helpful and I am glad there are other people who have the same problem. I have been on the pill for 4 years now and I had no idea that it can lead to melasma. Unfortunately, the packet doesn't list it as a side-effect even if 33% of women on the pill get it. I only noticed it last year and this year it got much worse since I was under the sun with no protection. I have it on my upper lip (the worst), the sides of my eyes and my nose. I went to my dermatologist who prescribed Pigmanorm, which I have been using since September 21st. I've seen great difference especially on my nose and eyesides. My upper lip is a bit red, but I can see that there is some difference. I had all kinds of concerns but my doctor reassured me that the concetration of Hydroquinone in the cream is not big to cause problems. I am paranoid about sunscreen these days and I use it day and night.
I want to wish good luck to all of us ladies!

I have been working on a solution for this. After my third child at the age of 35, 7 years later I am happy to recommend a product by hawaiianbathbody.com called Kukui oil, my skin is dramatically improving after only 1 month of using this. You may also want to visit treatmentformelasma.net for some more info on this skin condition. Avoiding sugar is key, use stevia if you need to something sweet.

I have had REALLY bad melasma for over 4 years and nothing seemed to help. I tried hydroquinone for over 2 years, laser treatments, electro treatments, peels, chinese herbal drinks, name it... I tried. Nothing seemed to help and as everyone, I lost self confidence and almost stopped going out. But recently I found this medicine kit from Taiwan called "Bai Li Tou Hong", and it works. Trust me ladies, it works. This is from someone who hates the sun. A few hours in the sun with all th sunblock (SPF50-60) I use everyday, I still get dark but with this cream, give is a few weeks and it brings me back to lighter, much lighter that maybe can easily hide it. And even without makeup, it is not all that bad if you use tinted moisturizer or sunscreen. Try this ladies, and you will be happy!

Can you please tell me where I can purchsae this from. I live in Australia.

Did you have any side effects?

    Thank you

Thank you Bina. Very helpful hint. I googled Bai Li Tou Hong and found a lot of info. Sounds like a very popular product which results in loads of imitations and fakes being sold now. What is the manufacturer of the one you bought? Did you buy from Taiwan? I have tried hydroquinose which did not help, am going through frexel laser which doesn't seem to do much good and costing me a fortune. How much did you pay for your BLTH prodct? Did it come in 3 jars or tubes? I saw lots of pictures in the various websites.

Really good lens! 5* thank you for sharing, really enjoyed reading it. I also have it, since I gave up smoking my skin looks better, everyone noticed how much lighter it got, sometimes people even say they cant see it, but I can, I really don't like it. I have spent so much money to get my skin clear, only now that I gave up smoking I see changes. Not sure why, or if it had anything to do with it, all I know is... it surely got better since I gave up smoking.

Shana - Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. As for makeup, I've been using Bobby Brown's foundation stick. The trick is to "build" with a creamy foundation or concealer. In other words, use foundation on your whole face and then add extra on your trouble spots. It seems to work well, but then of course you have to reapply.
  • Shana Aug 25, 2009 @ 5:24 pm | delete
I have it symmetrically over my upper lip.... It looks like I have a mustache. I am plagued with this all summer but it goes away when winter comes. I am a marathoner and run outside a lot and I wear a hat and SPF 60 and it still goes wild. I have yet to find a make up that even remotely covers it up. I hate using the bleaching cream but it does seem to help a little. So if anyone has makeup recommendations I'd be much obliged. :) I will definitely try the CoverBlend.
I know that I get it from birth control. I switched to Yaz about 5 months ago, thinking that the low dose of estrogen would help, and it hasn't made a difference, but I love Yaz so I'm going to stick with it anyway.

Much love to my fellow melasma sufferers!

The only time I have suffered from this is when I have been pregnant. This is an extremely helpful lens but what I like most about it is that it is based on your personal experience. This makes the lens far more genuine than those where products are being promoted that the writer has not actually tried.

Angel Blessings from me to you.

Forgot to mention that lasers also work very well, but are really pricey! If you have the money, by all means go for it. But do obey your esthetician with regards to post treatment skin care.
  • Squidoo_girl Jul 2, 2009 @ 10:16 am | delete
I definately agree with the glycolic chemical peel, there are also other treatments and peels (kinda expensive thought) that your esthetician can recommend. I know because my cousin is in that field :)

Your blog gives a lot of insight about melasma. Have you ever heard of tanning pills to cause melasma? I tried Elusun. I took two bottles (of course following directions) Also at the time I was on the birth control patch, for some reason I believe that the elusun played a big role in my melasma; that I have tried so hard to get rid of even resulting to expensive IPL Fotofacials(photofacials) that just slightly lightend it after 5 treatments. I have the complete mask that has definately affected my confident. I refuse to believe that there is no cure for melasma. I pray that oneday I will have my face back.

Wow! I've been looking for something like this! My dad immediately knew when I was pregnant because I got the 'mask of pregnancy' (which I had never heard of) and now my daughter is 16 months and I still have this awful skin discoloration. I've got an appointment to see a dermatologist soon. I agree - I'm very self conscious of it! Thanks!

Interesting and insightful lens.........During the high school years, I swore by drinking water, a strict workout routine, and, of course, Proactive Solution....lol.....the combination worked wonders :)

    P.S. great lens....5 stars definitely :)

I didn't discover that I had Melasma until it was too late. I had started taking birth control pills and then the following summer spent a TON of time in the sun. But that summer I ended up getting blotchy dark patches all over my face, so noticeable that people would comment. I found out later that it was Melasma, but by that time it was fairly dark. I was able to lighten it a little by staying out of the sun, but I actually found a great product without Hydroquinone in it- and IT WORKS. I started noticing a difference within the first 2 weeks of use and it's now nearly gone after 2 months of use. It's called Meladerm by Civant Skin Care, and you can only buy it online. It's only about $50, which is cheaper than many products out there, that either have dangerous chemicals or are not as effective. You can buy different sizes, but I buy the one that's just under 2 oz, as it seems to last a really long time. Hope this helps!

Melasma sounds terrible. I feel bad for the people that have it.

Very informative site. I have seen this condition but didn't know the name or what caused it. Thanks for enlightening me and for visiting my lens!
