BART CUMMINGS and Malaysian multi-millionaire Dato Tan Chin Nam met while playing two-up four decades ago. Yesterday, these mates - one a great trainer, the other a loyal racehorse owner - repelled an international invasion to ensure the Melbourne Cup stayed in Australia.

The heart-stopping victory of Viewed provided Cummings with his 12th Melbourne Cup and an unthinkable 250th group 1 win. These are the elite races in the thoroughbred game, and Cummings, who will be 81 next week, took out a licence to train horses back in 1953.

For Cummings and Chin Nam the victory of Viewed was the fourth time the odd couple had won the most prestigious race in the southern hemisphere. For them, it all started with Think Big, which won back-to-back cups in 1974 and 1975. Then along came a champion in Saintly, which breezed to victory in 1996.

Yesterday at Flemington, in front of 107,411 people, Cummings had the Brisbane Cup winner Viewed primed to peak once again. With Sydney's premier jockey, Blake Shinn, who Cummings admits to having discovered, riding the race of his 21-year-old life, Viewed fended off foreign raider Bauer to win a thriller.

Veiwed was purchased by Dato Tan's bloodstock agent of 28 years, Duncan Ramage. The price was cheap at $50,000, considering yearlings sell for millions, with six-figure sums the norm. Ramage found Viewed as a weanling at mate Ian Johnson's property at Wisemans Ferry on the Hawkesbury River.
