Melissa Albom - Snowboarder
Ranked #3,323 in Sports & Recreation, #96,634 overall
Meet Snowboarder Melissa Albom
Bigger, higher, faster - 11 year old Melissa Albom loves snowboarding! Strap a board to her feet and Melissa is happy. Her happiness resonates in her riding. She is a two times New Zealand jr. national snowboard champion and was the youngest person on the National Development Snowboard squad when she was selected at age 10.
The Northern and Southern hemispheres' 2009 winters were great seasons with a tough end for Melissa. She accomplished a few major goals, competing in her first international competition (US Burton Open Jr. Jam), landing a 540 in the pipe, getting her name carved on the Quest Banked Slalom trophy as winner in the 16 and under category and landing a 40 foot jump. Sadly, she also had her first ambulance ride and missed the 2009 NZ nationals.
**Update: Due to injury sustained in a fall in Sept 2009, Melissa has been pulled from competitive snowboarding for one year. She is recovering nicely and can't wait to get back on the snow.

Melissa Albom's 2009 Snowboard Video
This is a summary video of Melissa's season. A big lesson for us is to get video all season long, rather than waiting for the competitions. Video includes last year's Burton Open Jr. Jam.

You Can Help Melissa
Make your Amazon purchases from this page

Melissa needs to raise some money so she can attend the Burton Open Jr. Jam. All she asks, is that if you are in the market for anything from Amazon, why not purchase it here, as then the proceeds from the purchases will go towards Melissa's snowboarding.
Get Ready For A Day On The Snow
Keep Safe and Warm
From head to toe, Melissa wears Burton Gear. Currently she is in an XL Girls pants and an XS women's coat (to fit over her body armour.) Melissa rides on a Burton Feel Good 130.

Meeting the Pros and Hiking the Pipe
So Many People to Meet!

Aside from the actual competition, the Burton Open is full of fun! Here is a photo of Melissa with one of the world's top snowboarders, Keir Dillon. The second photo is her hiking the pipe at Jr. Jam practice.
Melissa - Ouch!
Not Melissa's favorite video!
Melissa walked away from this. Two weeks later she took a fall which sent her off the mountain in an ambulance. She will fully recover, but it ended her season and she missed the 2009 New Zealand Jr. Nationals, and the 2010 Northern Hemisphere season.
Melissa Volunteers at New Zealand Jr. Nationals

A big thank you to Tania at Snow Sport New Zealand for arranging for Melissa to volunteer at the Nationals, as she could not compete with her injury. Tania arranged for Melissa to have a Skidoo take her to and from the events.
Always Wear a Helmet!
Melissa's recent head injury prevented her from riding in the 2009 New Zealand Jr. Nationals and the 2010 seasons, both northern and southern hemisphers. Without a helmet, it would have been much worse.

Busking Helps to Raise Funds

Melissa also helps out in her fund raising efforts. When we are up on the North Island Melissa has been seen busking or making sausages. Should you spot her, please help support her. Busking photo was taken last year.

- Hey Melissa! It's Maddy Barret, 2011 US Open Junior Jam winner! I noticed you were here in 2009, my Brother (Tanner Barrett) won the Junior Jam that year. Did you have a good year this year? I noticed you were injured in 2010. Have a fantastic year this year! I still have another year in the junior jam, but hope to beat my 26th place in the seniors next year. Will I see you there?

- Melissa, you're a star! You'll be inspiring girls everywhere to give snowboarding a go.
I don't know how I missed this lens but am now here to lensroll it to my Tips for Female Snowboarding Beginners. It would take a lot of work to be as awesome as you are but maybe some women out there who think they can't do it will take a look at your story and at least give it a go.
