The Melissa and Doug's Cupcakes

High Quality Play Food from Melissa and Doug

The Melissa and Doug Cupcake set comes with four cupcakes, 4 cupcake paper liners, a cupcake tin which holds the four cupcakes, dry erase markers that look like tubes of frosting for writing on the 4 plastic frosting pieces that fit nicely on each wooden cupcake.

Children can practice counting to 4 as well as one to one correspondence as they place the cupcakes in the cupcake tin and add frosting to each top. As they get older they can add the number of cupcakes and the number of frosting tops to discover that 4+4=8.

With 4 sets of Cupcakes you can easily add pattern making, multiplication and division activities as well as fractions and ratios.

Unpacking Melissa and Doug Wooden Cupcakes

Notice how large these cupcakes are. You can see that there is room to do lots of writing on the frosting. What a great place to create patterns. In fact, that is what math is all about, using numbers to describe patterns.

Let you child create pretty designs on each cupcake and then look for the patterns. Maybe there are five petals with dot in each one.. Count the petals. Now count the dots. 5 + 9 =10.

Another example of your wonderful teaching pages. I have a page about kids baking and how much they learn from that. It's how we teach, where the interest is. Dinosaurs, cupcakes, glitter and unicorns. Whatever works. Thanks for another great page.

I love everything that Melissa & Doug make and these Melissa & Doug Bake and Decorate Cupcake Sets look wonderful. What a great idea for teaching counting. Evidently, I need to take your class because I didn't score very good on the quiz because I answered with just the number. lol

I think I'd be better at math if I had learned with cupcakes! :)

Loved this - I too got that square one wrong - hmm 3 cupcakes each side -- well that won't work - a super idea and a clever quiz.
  • CCGAL Dec 8, 2010 @ 12:22 pm | delete
12 cupcakes will form a square, but it will be a hollow one. I think your question meant a solid square filled with cupcakes, not what I was thinking, which was a hollow square with 4 cupcake corners, and 2 cupcakes on each side to form the square. Other than my confusion over that question, I totally enjoyed this cupcake lens. (oh, my captcha is mega geek, too funny!)

I took the quiz and really made 100%, but my old hand didn't click the right little circle, or my mouse slipped, so it said I missed one. I want a recount!! ;) Nice lens. I haven't had a chance to check out the Cupcake Club yet. I'm still trying to catch up!

Thank you for stopping by to play with the cupcakes. It certainly can be difficult to concentrate on those little dots when cupcakes are involved.
