New Neural Pathways Lead to Music

At age 19, Melody Gardot was commuting on her bicycle to fashion classes at the Community College of Philadelphia when she was hit by a jeep. She sustained head and spinal injuries that left her "almost a vegetable," she said.

When medication and physical therapy no longer helped, she turned to music and credits listening to music and then humming or singing with helping to re-establish neural pathways in her brain. While she continues to experience residual difficulties from her injuries such as constant pain, dizziness, memory loss and sensitivities to light and sound, she made an amazing recovery.

In 2006, songs that Gardot wrote and sang showed up on MySpace and she began to perform on stage, an experience that blotted out pain and replaced suffering with a flow experience.

Now Melody Gardot's album titled My One and Only Thrill ranked No. 1 on the Swedish music charts for more than four weeks and continues to climb the charts in countries throughout the world..

Interviews with Melody Gardot

History of Melody Gardot | Interview Magazine
To reveal that an artist has overcome adversity in order to achieve success in the music industry is, generally speaking, about as much of a revelation as the discovery of cuteness in babies or kittens. See Behind the Music, any episode, or an open mic-night in the West Village. But Melody Gardot's story takes the singer-songwriter's woeful narrative arc and turns it on its head.

Melody Gardot | Baby I'm a Fool

Norwegian/Swedish talkshow "Skavlan" on September 25, 2009

How was I to know that this was always only just a little game to you?
All the time I felt you gave your heart I thought that I would do the same for you,
Tell the truth I think I should have seen it coming from a mile away,
When the words you say are,
"Baby I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall in love"
If I gave a thought to fascination I would know it wasn't right to care,
Logic doesn't seem to mind that I am fascinated by the love affair,
Still my heart would benefit from a little tenderness from time to time, but never mind,
Cos Baby I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall in love,
Baby I should hold on just a moment and be sure it's not for vanity,
Look me in the eye and tell me love is never based upon insanity,
Hear the way my heart is beating every other moments fleeting,
Kiss me now,
Don't ask me how,
Cos Baby I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall,
Baby I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall,
And I would never tell if you became a fool and fell in Love.

Jazz has, much to the loss of the general public, gone under appreciated these days. Great lens for a great artist.

Amazing though it is, the story of how Melody Gardot overcame the effects of a near-fatal accident to become one of the vocal sensations of 2008 is not the most extraordinary thing about the 23-year-old Philadelphia singer-songwriter. It is simply that here is a voice in a million; one that touches the soul.

Flow: The Classic Work on How to Achieve Happiness

Flow

You have heard about how a musician loses herself in her music, how a painter becomes one with the process of painting. In work, sport, conversation or hobby, you have experienced, yourself, the suspension of time, the freedom of complete absorption in activity. This is "flow," an experience that is at once demanding and rewarding--an experience that Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi demonstrates is one of the most enjoyable and valuable experiences a person can have.
