Melted March - Making a Textiles Nest Bowl for March

A Project for March

March is such a relief for me - it's a beautiful time of year.

The weather starts warming up and leaves and shoots start sprouting and birdies are tweeting happily.

I love using imagery of nests and eggs in my craft work and this project is no exception.

I originally collected the information in the lens below to act as inspiration to help me come up with a textiles project for March.

Since originally making this lens I've made my March project so I've updated this page with my March crafty goodness!

This Lens was Made for My Melted Fabrics Calendar

What is this calendar business all about?

During the end of 2009 I started feverishly working on making some textiles tutorials to go on a calendar.

I loved the idea of having a textiles tutorial on each page of a calendar.

I soon realised that I couldn't cram everything (crafty eye candy, instructions to tell you how to make your own versions of the projects, patterns and templates) onto a single calendar page and still have it all be legible.

I decided as well as making the calendar I'd also make an e-book so I could use all of my work in progress images and all that other cool stuff.

Please read on to find out more.

My Inspiration

Originally I started thinking of daffodils when I thought of March, but because I was developing all these projects for each month, at the same time, I knew that I wanted to focus on leaves and shoots and flowery bits for my April project.

That's the trouble when considering months that all fall under the same season and don't have a specific festive occassion - as we know even Easter swaps around between March and April.

Although, to be honest I didn't consider Easter exactly, either for March or April - even though I did go with eggs for March.

I love daffodils and all that yellow that suddenly crops up around early spring.

Check out the image below. This is a textiles piece I made and covered with appliqued-on daffodil patches.

Above: I thought about making something similar to my Spring Art Quilt, shown above but decided to focus on greens and yellows for April.

“There's something really cosy about eggs in a nest.”

Next I started thinking about nests.

I think a lot of art and crafts people love nest imagery in their work. I know I do - so any excuse to make something with nests and eggs - even if it is considered twee and cutesy to some, is good for me!

I find that Robin's egg blue colour particularly appealing when it's combined with browns.

Check out the textiles detail below. This is a detail from a textiles piece featuring a baby in a nest. I was going through my Anne Geddes phase at the time!

Until Now features Anne Geddes's classic baby images which will appeal to those who love cutesy flower fairies and cabbage patch babies.

96 pages featuring Anne Geddes's favourite photos and the stories behind them.

When I originally started thinking about making a nest for this March project, I began to think about hats and how I could make a hat with a bird's nest on it. Sounds a little crazy but that's the way I think.

I already had a hat I wanted to "redesign" (as you'll see further down this page).

I also started to think about fascinators and smaller hairclips that I could decorate with tiny textiles nests.

I adore the moss in the nest below. I love the idea of someone making moss out of textiley bits.

Perhaps it would be fun to make some "moss" by embroidering dissolvable fabric to create a green cobwebby mess.

Nest View Bird House

This is a nesting box which sticks to your window so that you can watch birds nesting. Pretty cool!

However I see that a few reviewers had problems with the bird house so I'd advise only getting one if you have a small window in a room that doesn't get used very often. If you keep going in and out of a room and turning the lights on - or if the room is too light then birds are not going to want to nest there!

People have also mentioned having problems with the birdhouse falling off their windows so think about setting the box low down so that it's propped up by the ledge or by a piece of wood.

This is a birdhouse with an acrylic back so that it can be placed on a window, giving you the opportunity to watch a birds nest and eggs hatch.

Just be careful not to disturb the room very often!

Doodles and Designs

I originally made the doodle below when I bought a sad-looking old hat from a charity shop.

The hat was in such a sad condition - I was surprised it had even put out for sale. I imagine some sweet little old lady had worn it out in a rain storm on her way to church one morning because it was really warped and battered-looking!

Originally I was planning to use this hat to make something fabulous for an e-book I was making about recycling for textiles but I didn't get around to recycling it before I wanted to start work on this project.

I was thinking about covering the hat in all sort of net and frothy bits of fabric, a nest and maybe even some birds.

Above: I originally wanted to make something with this old hat I'd found in a charity shop.

I was angling for either some sort of extravagant shop model on a hat that was made to look like sea (think Marie Antoinette's crazy wigs!) or something with a nest full of eggs (smaller lower image).

Love using bird imagery in your arts and crafts work?

These stamps would be perfect!

The next thing to think about was if I made this nest then what would I make it out of?

Pipe cleaners would be great for making the twigs of a nest or even machine stitched cords - I didn't end up making my nest that way but that could be a fun project for kids.

Starting Work on the Nest

I always collect much more fabric than I need for a project so that I have a good selection to choose from.

I chose a combination of very thick, tweedy fabrics and very feathery delicate fabrics.

Above: The fabrics I collected for my nest. Of course, I collected way more than I actually needed!

This project comes in two parts.

First there is the nest bowl to make and then the felted eggs.

I used a combination of needle felting and wet felting to create the egg shapes.

Above: The nest and eggs before the eggs had any texture felted onto them.
