Setting up and managing membership sites can have it's own problems. You need to be careful about these or your dreams of earning a recurring income can be quickly shattered. Here are some things to be aware of:

1. You might need an expensive software to run your membership site and it may take quite a while to offset this cost through the subscription money. Don't worry - there are quite a few low cost alternatives available.

2. You will have to provide good content on regular basis or the members will get bored and disappointed and cancel their subscription. I have seen some sites send a useful bonus or report just before the renewal is due to keep the members excited enough. Again, there are good content sources which you can tap easily.

What do your members think? What do they want? Are you just guessing or have you asked them?

You must run periodic surveys through the forum or a survey tool like Surveymonekey to find out what your members want or need and you should fulfil that want.

This will create a perception that you care about your members and will increase the average time a member stays active. After all, it is about them, not you - isn't it?

Share New Developments With The Members 

If you manage a membership site (or more), you must keep the members updated about all the new developments and features that you are introducing.

The best way to do this is through a blog. You should attach a blog to your site at say, www.domain.com/blog. This way, you can make a quick post referring to the new development or post a detailed note about using the new feature.

Tip: Alert your members to new content 

Some people will join your membership site and forget. Keep them aware of new content and increase renewals.

Some people join a membership site after reading an impressive sales letter and then forget to visit the site or forum regularly because they get busy with other things.

Then they get a note from the payment proessor when the renewal takes place. This is the time for buyer's remorse and the thought floating in his mind is "Why did I make this dud investment? Let's cancel this recurring expense." How do you avoid this?

A cool way is to send regular mails (once a week seems to be a good balance) alerting the members to the new content and a teaser about that. A few of the members will definitely sit up and take notice and visit the site enjoying and benefiting from the new content.

Some sites schedule sending of a notice of a big benefit just before the renewal is due. Or may be a bonus! This helps them to ovecome the buyers' remorse and keeps the membership account live.

While most of the content in a membership site will be locked to the outsiders, you may plan to offer a sneak peek into some of it for the non-members to tease them into joining.
