Memento (2000): Some Memories Are Best Forgotten
Memento - one of the best movies of 2000 - was inspired by a short story by Jonathan Nolan, the brother of the film's director Christopher Nolan.
The short story, Memento Mori, became Memento and stars Guy Pearce as a former insurance fraud investigator (Leonard Shelby), who is hunting for the man who he believes raped and killed his wife during a burglary.
Unfortunately for Leonard, he now has anterograde amnesia, which he contracted from severe head trauma during the attack on his wife. This renders his brain unable to store new memories. To cope with his condition, he maintains a system of notes, photographs, and tattoos to record information about himself and others, including his wife's killer.
He is helped in his investigations by Teddy (Joe Pantoliano) and Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss), neither of whom he can truly trust.
Memento Trailer & Movie Review
'Memento' Trailer Rated R For Bad Language & Violence
If you're looking for something suspenseful, but different than your usual thriller, this is the best film you will see in a long time.
The movie starts with a murder: a revenge killing. But was the right person killed?
Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce) is a man with no short-term memory. He hasn't been able to form new memories since the night his wife was murdered. Now he's on a hunt to find the murderer but with no way of remembering names, dates, places, facts and faces. Instead he tattoos himself with mementos of his search. When someone knows his name, he checks Polaroids to see if he knows them. Does he like this person? Does he trust this person? Is this the killer? He doesn't know unless he has scribbled a note.
Christopher Nolan puts you right inside Leonard's head. You see the story in reverse, so that you never know more than Leonard. In one scene you see him obtaining information from a person who knows him: maybe a good person, maybe not. In the next scene you witness a previous meeting between the two which illuminates their relationship further. Later still, you see how they met. But is that all of the story? You have yet to find out, and you won't know everything until the last scene. By watching the events backwards, you have no knowledge of what came before.
It is awesome story telling. However, you might become frustrated because you don't know exactly what's going on. That's normal. In fact, that's the whole idea. Just sit back and find out just how complex is Leonard's world.
This film will leave you with its own memento, and you'll find it difficult forgetting how much you enjoyed it.

Guy Pearce and Joe Pantoliano are brilliant in this stunning film. In Memento, Leonard Shelby (Pearce), hunts down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty is that the incident also robbed him of his ability to make new memories. Unable to remember places, faces, or new clues on his own, Leonard tries to track the perpetrator with the help of notes, Polaroids, and homemade tattoos.

I love this movie! So well made - it's amazing to me how even though we are jumping back and forth in time you still always know what is happening.

Loved this movie! Not only were the story and the acting great, I think Leonard is an inspiration to all of us absent-minded folks. If someone like him can get things done by having a system, then anybody can.

I've certainly heard of the film, and I've always like Guy Pearce as an actor, but I had no idea what it was about till reading your lens. And now I'm definitely interested in seeing it. I jotted it down on my list of movies to rent.

No, it's not my thing at all!
nightbear says:
Really not my thing, I do't care for violence and R rated movies, but your lens is beautiful. At least now I know before I go.

- I saw this movie a couple of years ago, and, now that I'm old enough to have short term memory myself LOL, I decided to watch it again on a whim. I am amazed at how the film stands up. I saw nuances this viewing that I don't remember seeing in the last. Nolan is doing Inception, due out in July, and the theme sounds similar. I cannot recommend this movie enough. Eventually, you will put certain flashbacks and fast-forwards together and be stunned at the "real" story. Thumbs up!
