My Antique Trunks - Functional Collectibles That Store a Life's Memories

This lens is about my most prized possession - my treasure trunk of personal keepsakes, souvenirs and mementos.

I've collected old trunks for more than 40 years. My favorite is the one I use to store my life's memories: photos, baby clothes, my grandmother's coffee grinder, my graduation cap and gown, honeymooon postcards and menus, ticket stubs and greeting cards.

I have always loved old trunks. As a child I remember climbing on the old trunk in my grandmother's sewing room. That leather-bound round-top steam ship chest traveled with Nana from Germany in the late 1920s to her new home in America. It carried her most precious possessions and protected them on a journey by ship to New York.

My grandmother stored her most precious keepsakes in a trunk for many years. When she passed away, my mother continued the tradition, adding her own special mementos and sentimental items to the cache of personal treasures. I continued the tradition with my own trunk, discovered at a flea market in New Hampshire.

Preserving A Lifetime of Memories

My Trunk - Guardian of My Memorabilia and Life History

My life, like that of anyone else, has been a series of events and memorable occasions. At each important milestone since I was 15 years old I've saved something as a keepsake; after more than 40 years those mementos add up to quite a collection of cards, letters, magazines and newspapers, dried flowers, ribbons, photos, clothing and small treasures that I hold dear.

My collection of memorabilia first lived in a few cardboard gift boxes and a scrapbook. Later my keepsakes moved to an old suitcase, then a large plastic storage box. Finally I found the perfect home for my treasures: a vintage trunk that could serve as a piece of furniture near my door.

My Personal Treasures Live in an Antique Trunk

Everywhere I've moved, this trunk's traveled with me - in my car, not the moving van

My mother has my grandmother's trunk that carried her valuables from Germany to the United States. One day I hope the family trunk will come to live in my home and join my collection of antique trunks. Until that time, my keepsakes are stored in an old wooden trunk I found at a flea market many years ago. It's battered and worn, but still strong and beautiful.

The keepsakes of my life fit into that restored trunk that once carried clothing and household goods from one place to another. Perhaps this trunk was used by a family immigrating to the USA at the same time as my grandparents? Or, maybe it held precious heirlooms sent from far away to New England?

Whatever its history, my beloved old trunk has been a trusted keepsakes guardian for more than 30 years. It holds memorabilia, clothes, photo albums, letters and cards that celebrate the milestones of my life - some happy, some less cheerful - reminders and connections to events in my life worthy of remembering. One day the contents of this trunk will pass along to my children and grandchildren, complete with notes about their meaning and significance.

Here are a few of the very special mementos I store in my vintage trunk treasure chest.

My First Bible

In the community where I grew up in Massachusetts, each child who finished 4th grade Sunday School was presented a Bible with our name imprinted on the front in gold.

My first Bible was used at our wedding, and is still marked with the passage read by our officiant.

Antique Trunks and Treasure Chests

Decades ago, household items were shipped in wooden barrels or crates.

Wooden trunks were sometimes covered with leather, reptile skins or glued on fabric and paint on the outside and newspaper or wallpaper on the interior to make them dust and water resistant. Trunks used for travel held clothing and were often called wardrobes.

Today, many restored trunks and wardrobes are stripped down to the bare wood, then varnished or oiled. Their hardware is polished or repainted to remove rust and tarnish.

My Family Photo Albums

I have thousands of photographs of my family and friends, many stored in boxes or digital format. My most precious are the photos of my daughters when they were babies. Sometimes I think I looked not much older than a child myself.

Valentine Cards and Candy Boxes

I save greeting cards from family members and friends. My husband gives me a beautiful box of chocolates (dark only!) for Valentine's day each year. My birthday is in February, so I keep all the cards and notes I receive throughout the year in a beautiful heart-shaped box.

Contemporary Trunks, Crates and Footlockers

Newer trunks and storage boxes are made from many different materials: wood, wicker, plastic and cardboard.

Our Honeymoon Airline Tickets

Our honeymoon trip to Bermuda was a wonderful vacation and we have many memories of picture-perfect weather and friendly people. We celebrated Labour Day in Hamilton Harbor while we were there.

My Grandchildren's Art Work

My granddaughter loves to paint and draw. She's been making me wonderful pictures since she was about 2 years old. I cherish each one, and save them in a special portfolio in my treasure trunk.

Save My Treasure Trunk

No matter where I've lived, I've kept my Treasure Trunk near a doorway, usually in the entry hall. It serves as a place to sit and take off my boots, drop my bags or library books and hold a collection of magazines or basket of hats and gloves. In case of disaster I can drag the trunk outside and salvage my keepsakes - or so I like to believe.

Carp Kite from Japan

My first career took me to far away places. I visited Japan on business twice, and this carp kite is only one of many souvenirs I brought home from Yokohama and Tokyo.

Security Chest

Important Documents Deserve a Lockable Fireproof Waterproof Container

My most important papers and personal documents get special treatment: I keep these in a fire-resistant locking chest that's more like a safe.

Trade Show Badges

Various jobs offered opportunities for travel across the USA to trade shows and exhibitions. I saved my badges and other swag as a reminder of just how much time I spent on the road before I changed careers.

Collectibles on eBay

If you lose a cherished memento, or want to add to a collection of old but special stuff, you can usually find a good selection of collectibles, keepsakes and memorabilia on e-Bay.

Modern Day StorageTrunks - Foot Lockers

Trunks and foot lockers are popular containers for moving, shipping, storage and travel. They're often used as furniture in homes, dorms and camps. Practical, attractive trunks and boxes are sturdy and secure; you can lock them if you need extra security. You can use a trunk as a seat or as a table. The first piece of furniture for many college grads is their foot locker that traveled withe them to camp and school.
