Poems In Rememberance of Fallen Soldiers

A soldier who gave his life for his country in the current Iraq War inspired these poems. Please contact me if you'd like permission to reprint.

Ode to a Soldier

We knew you before
you were Specialist.
Then you were only
our friend, our brother.
We mourn you now as
Uncle Sam's fallen son.

Our Grateful Nation Honors You

Our treasured friend, our beloved brother
served our country with honor.
Why did they send you to that faraway land?

Eyes that shall never again see
look at us from the front page.
Why did they make our hearts rend?

Our grateful nation honors you
with flag, medal, and horn.
Why did they sow the seed of war?

Just as our healing begins,
farewell is owed to another.
Why did they cause us to reap sorrows?

copr. 2003 A. Preston
