First-Hand Accounts of a Civil War Prison

Two years ago I visited Andersonville, Georgia. Standing on that ground where thousands died, I looked up at the stockade walls and the guard tower. Trying to imagine how my great-great grandfather might have felt being in that Civil War prison was beyond my imagination.

I've searched for first-hand accounts by Union prisoners to see more what the experience was like. I've gathered what I've found here. If you are looking for primary source material on Andersonville Prison then you just hit the jackpot. Brace yourself, as reading the memories of that horrible experience may linger unpleasantly in your mind for a long time to come.

Dancing Along the Deadline: The Andersonville Memoir of a Prisoner of the Confederacy

"Ezra Ripple paints a detailed picture of the conditions which captured Union soldiers endured inside Confederate prisons. As starvation was the greatest hardship, Ripple writes a lot about how the prisoners acquired food and how they made the most of it. He describes the physical layout of the prisons, the prisoners' routines, the prison guards and administrators, and his interaction with them." (review by MiraReviews on Amazon)

John Ransom's Andersonville Diary: Life Inside the Civil War's Most Infamous Prison

"When one considers that John Ransom, at the time of his interment at Andersonville, was not a professional writer, and that much of his recounting of his horrible experiences was censored, this diary is compelling, gritty, gruesome, and all too credible. This unblinking look at a part of Civil War history that is often overlooked, captured my attention as few diaries have." (review by a Top 500 Reviewer on Amazon)
