Best Dessert EVER!
For as long as I remember, apple pie has been my favorite dessert! And it didn't take long before I discovered that it was even better with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream on top. As I got older, people would stare at me because I would spread the ice cream and whipped cream all over my piece of pie so it covered the entire piece.
Doesn't everyone do that??
Now, I have it at every holiday. In fact, as I write this, the 4th of July is coming up and I will be celebrating with hamburger, baked beans and apple pie a la mode. I usually buy a pie from Fresh Market. Theirs seems to be the best in this area.
There are places I remember...
Along the way to becoming the apple pie a la mode connoisseur that I am, I got pretty good at figuring out where the places were to find a good piece of apple pie.
In college and grad school, Bennigan's had an apple pie dessert that seemed huge! It was served in a big round dish and I always got it with a huge scoop of ice cream and whipped cream. Sadly, they stopped selling it quite some time ago.
A few years later, when I worked in an office near lots of local mom-and-pop restaurants, I discovered Brutti's, which offered my very favorite lunch. An albacore tuna sandwich on a croissant and a huge piece of apple pie a la mode for dessert!! I'm not sure I have ever had a piece as good since they stopped using the bakery they got that particular apple pie from, though, of course, I found other good places to haunt.
Since I have never been good at making things from scratch, I still grab my pie while out and about, but while I was looking around online, I thought I'd find some recipes for those who you who do bake from scratch. And you will find a lot of other apple pie information.
Hope you brought your appetite!
"Good apple pies are a considerable part of our domestic happiness."

Ken Haedrich's Apple Pie Perfect celebrates America's most treasured dessert with 100 definitive recipes--everything from a traditional lattice-topped version and Haedrich's parents' brown sugar pie to newer incarnations, including Baked Apple Dumpling Pie, Apple and Brie Pie, and multifruit delights such as Apple-Plum Pie with Coconut Streusel.
Apple Pie 101 and then some, the book first offers 10 versatile crust recipes, including the author's favored All-American Double Crust (which requires both butter, for flavor, and shortening, for tender flakiness), plus a delicious whole wheat version, then proceeds to the pies, arranged according to the seasons. The recipes walk would-be pie makers through the process carefully, which should encourage even the baking novice to try their hand. ... --Arthur Boehm, Amazon Review

EDITORIAL
New York Times, 1902
"It is utterly insufficient (to eat pie only twice a week), as anyone who knows the secret of our strength as a nation and the foundation of our industrial supremacy must admit. Pie is the American synonym of prosperity, and its varying contents the calendar of the changing seasons. Pie is the food of the heroic. No pie-eating people can ever be permanently vanquished."

There is a story about the Duke of Edinburough, the Queen's husband, visiting a small town in northern Canada. During the royal visit he had lunch at the local diner.Of course all eyes were on the royal booth when the restaurant's proprietress came to the table to clear the plates and while gently lifting it from his plate, smiled warmly, and advised "Keep your fork Duke, there's pie."~~Hoosier Mama Pie Company
Don't forget the vanilla ice cream and whipped cream on top (and hey, no one will mind if you eat it with a spoon)!

This lens was given the Squidoo Lens Review stamp of approval recently and I thought I would come celebrate that here!! (Hoo-ah!). I loved what Sylvestermouse said about her own fondness for apple pie...I couldn't help but be overwhelmed by nostalgia as I read IntuitiveHealer's Memories of Apple Pie. I thought about my own precious grandmother peeling apples, rolling out and shaping the crust with her fingers, cutting the slits in the top and slipping the pie in the oven to bake. When the pie was finished, we would sit down at the table to enjoy a hot piece of pie and just talk. I don't remember what we talked about, but I do remember the time she spent making her house a home.
How wonderful that my *cough* addiction *cough*, I mean, LOVE for all things apple pie has helped me get such a favorable review! :)
Thanks so much!!

- Apple Pie in any shape or form is my husband's favorite. I sometimes like a slice of cheddar on my warm pie.

- Not as often as I would like. I must admit sometimes I like a slice of cheddar cheese on my hot apple pie if I don't have any ice cream around. My grandmother taught me to eat apple pie like that. Besides I am a "cheese person" to the core. Congratulation on your giant squid status :-)
