The Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn Book Series by Tad Williams
Ranked #6,063 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #219,942 overall
The Best Science Fiction - Fantasy Series
When I was younger, I tried to read the Lord of the Rings series. I found it confusing with all the different races, the different languages that were not mine, the confusing names. I never got very far into the book at all. Of course, I had seen the cheesy cartoon version of The Hobbit back in the 70's. It wasn't until the movies came out that I 'got' LOTR.
But not being able to read those books did not stop me from looking for more. Tad Williams' series about a kitchen boy who ends up against all odds saving the world caught my attention and imagination. This was more like it!
The books feature other races, different names, confusing languages, but it's easier to follow than Tolkien's Lord of the Ring series, at least in my opinion!
The story was so compelling, I often re-read it, going from one book to another. And these are not chintzy sized books either! The last book in the series is commonly broken down into a part one and a part two, especially when it came out in paperback.
Each book is about the search for a sword; the magic of these swords are the only hope against the combined power of the two High Kings, the ancient Sithi and the new-crowned human, who already have possession of at least one of the swords.
A good long read of an excellent series that you want to continue forever. I cannot recommend these books strongly enough. Go read them!

The Dragonbone Chair

The first book of the series starts out with the kitchen boy Simon, known as 'Mooncalf' for his daydreaming ways, working at the castle. He knows all the hidden places (to avoid Rachel the Dragon, Mistress of the Chambermaids) and who is who around the Keep. He finds himself apprenticed to Doctor Morgenes, the castle's healer and wizard, and his adventures really begin.
Times are changing in the world. The old King is dying and his two sons are arriving with their men for the last of his days. Dark omens are also arriving, including a ominous red star hanging low in the sky.
A brother's betrayal, an evil adviser, different races arriving for the coronation; the castle is bustling with activities and adventures for a scullery boy.
In this book, Simon meets up with Binabik who will be his companion through all three books. Also he meets with the 'boy' he's seen around the Castle, is the serving girl Marya, who even later in the book turns out to be the Princess Miriamele. They all end up adventuring together and travel through the lands discovering friends, enemies and uncovering facts and surprises about the Castle and their people.

Book two in the series begins where The Dragonbone Chair left off, with Simon finding the first sword that is prophesied to save the world, Thorn and wresting it from the dragon.
The dwarves are putting Binabik on trial while Simon is recovering, along with one of their travel companions. Jiriki, the Sithi who has become one of the companions, is not inclined to put himself out to help them as his debt is to Simon alone.
Simon manages to free his friends despite this and they make their way back to the Prince who had sent them on this adventure to find the first of the three swords.
Meanwhile, the Princess runs away, while another Princess, Maegwin the Hernystiri, is fighting for her people and her sanity, and the Prince and his people prepare for war.
