Master Memory Techniques ebook
Are you constantly trying to recall other people's names? Are you often searching for your keys or purse? Before boosting your memory, it's important to know how mind works.
We often think humans have two types of memory: short and long term. But scientists, researching how the brain works, think there are three categories: sensory, short and long term. Imagine them as stores, or places where we keep information. Before we can recall, it needs to be stored. You may have heard the phrase "Use it, or lose it". This can be applied to our brain power, too. Stereotypes of older adults forgetting is just that - a stereotype that may make interesting TV, but it doesn't tell the whole story. As kids, we learn through strict processes (including repetition, practice, and mnemonics), which solidifies the information for later ease in recall.
Researchers realize that we need to exercise our mind, just like our bodies. The more we practice, the stronger our brain becomes.
Memory Tools
You can use mnemonics, or memory tools. One way is to associate the person's name with the place you met or another familiar event. For example, you can remember Bob at the beach party. You're using the first letter of his name and the party.
Acronyms also help. These are abbreviations, using the first letter of each word, such as the NBA for the National Basketball Association. Change the letters to something that will trigger the words you want to remember.
Sentences of acrostics are similar to acronyms, except you will make sentences rather than one word. A well-known example is My Dear Aunt Sally to help you remember the order of mathematics: Multiply and Divide before you Add and Subtract.
Rhymes and songs are tricks from our ancestors. Bible stories, folk tales, and other kinds of information were passed around through familiar rhymes or songs. It guides recall because it includes other senses besides the written language.
Use Memory Tools Effectively
While these (and many more in the book) can help increase your memory, there are ways to make the tools even more effective. When you create a mnemonic, make sure to use these tips:
- Think of positive images, as our mind tends to block unpleasant ones.
- Exaggerate the important part of the image.
- Imagine vivid pictures, which will stay in your mind longer than plain ones.
- Use humor.
- "Code" your mnemonic with all your senses: sight, smell, sounds, feelings, taste, and touch. The more detailed the association, the stronger you make the memory.
