A look at Memory Foam Mattresses

The past few years have seen a growing popularlity of memory foam mattresses .Unlike older mattresses which sag and beome rigid  The specialty of these mattresses is that they adjust to the body's temperature and and to the body's shape.The mattress redistributes the body's weight and thereby significantly reduces skin pressure by as much as 50%.

The mattress industry in the United States saw a 50% increase in sales of memory foam mattresses and more and more people are buying it for a good night's sleep. Most people with arthritis, who have used the mattress have a positive response about it. It is also allergy resistant.


NASA developed memory foam for use in it's space program. The need of developing the mattress was felt to ease the pressure of extreme G-forces which astronauts experience.Though it's practical use in the space program, was limited it was subsequently used in medical applications : paralysis patients suffering from from pressure sores .

Memory foam mattresses were initially too expensive for general use as very few manufacturers had the technology to manufacture them. Now all major companies manufacture memory foam mattresses including Sealy , Simmons Serta at reasonable prices..

 

Memory foam is made from polyurethane with additional chemicals that add to its viscosity level, thereby increasing its density. It is often referred to as visco-elastic polyurethane foam. 

The hardness or softness of memory foam plays an important role in ensuring comfort. Its firmness is determined by its IFD rating.  IFD ratings for memory foam range between super soft (10) and semi-rigid (120).
