5 Memory Foam Mattress Topper Buying Mistakes

Don't just blindly take a salespersons word.  You should know the 5 basics when shopping for a memory foam mattress topper.

1. Foam density should be at least 4.0 lb., this is required for true support.

2. Thickness should be minimum of 3" so you don't "bottom out".

3. Make sure it's temperature sensitive foam, that's what makes a memory foam topper so unique and so comfortable.

4. Buy from a reputable dealer and manufacturer, there are lots of "fly by night" memory foam companies springing up. We tested a Coscto memory foam mattress topper because we could return it if we didn't like it.

5. Don't put a memory foam topper on a worn out mattress.  If you don't have a choice, it's ok, but memory foam is designed to sit on a hard surface such as a platform bed or foundation.

How To Be a Smart Memory Foam Topper Buyer

Being a smart memory foam topper buyer is not as difficult as it may sound.

I'm sure you don't want to spend hours at memory foam university trying to master the finer points of memory foam toppers, visco elastic material, latex and so forth.

The basic things to consider are:

1. What is your height and weight.

You want your purchase to serve it's purpose, which is comfort and restful sleep.

If you purchase a mattress topper that's too light in density, you won't get the support you are looking for to help with low back pain.

If the memory foam is too thin, you will bottom out right back onto your old mattress and that defeats the whole purpose of why you invested in a topper.

2. Visco elastic memory foam, as originally developed for NASA, is temperature sensitive and that's very important. If you have an injury, it will normally be fevered. The higher temperature at that part of your body will cause the foam to soften so that you don't have so much pressure on the injured area.

Just remember, density and temperature sensitivity when you shop and you'll be miles ahead of the average memory foam mattress topper buyer.

NASA Memory Foam Mattress Topper

A Few Things You Must Know

A visco memory foam mattress topper gets it's name from the visco-elastic material developed for NASA in the early 1970's in conjunction with the space program.

Of course, they weren't looking for a memory foam mattress topper, they needed seating that was more like a big, overstuffed recliner.

Visco memory foam was developed from foam that had some unique characteristics, such as being open celled and able to return to their original shape and resiliency after being compressed.

Because the billions of cells, in a visco memory foam mattress topper, are open, air can slowly escape from them and pass into other cells that are adjacent.

As you lie on a memory foam mattress topper, it "melts away" from you until your body is completely and evenly supported over it's entire surface.

In the beginning developments of this material, it was too expensive to be used for residential consumer mattresses, toppers and pillows.

Over time, the manufacturing costs have been whittled to a point that a good memory foam mattress topper is now very reasonably priced.
