Walking In Memphis
I've lived around the Memphis area nearly all my life. Saturdays were spent shopping at the now defunct Mall of Memphis or at the Memphis Zoo.
Like most cities, Memphis has grown. With it, its problems have grown as well, but if you're new to the city or simply visiting, there's sure to be something to enjoy while you're here.
Memphis As I Know It
Technically, I'm from 60 mile north of Memphis in a smaller town by the name of Jackson, TN. I've lived in Memphis, however, for about six years and weekends have almost always been spent in the home of the Delta Blues.
Memphis is hot. It's recently become a haven for crime. Jobs are scarce and kindness is sometimes missing in the rush to live.
However, it's also the place that birthed Rock and Roll. Without Memphis, there'd be no Sun Records, no Elvis Presley. No Johnny Cash. No Jerry Lee Lewis. No Al Green and No Stax.
Memphis is music and barbeque. A chorus of cicadas and blue suede shoes. We're the blues and the muddy Mississippi. All this other stuff that has clouded Memphis' vision lately, that's just a diversion. The real Memphis is still under there. You've just got to know where to find it.
Memphis Museums
- Pink Palace Museum
- I have a lot of fond memories of going to this museum as a child. Slightly cheesy animatronic dinosaurs and a really cool replica of the first Piggly Wiggly supermarket, the Pink Palace Museum offers a chance to waste away an afternoon in Memphis.
- The Children's Museum of Memphis
- The Children's Museum of Memphis offers a number of weekly activities for children such as special exhibits, costumed character visits and hands-on activities.
Elvis Week - 2007
That is until 2007. Gathering up my camcorder, I made my way down to Elvis Presley Boulevard to see what this noise was all about.

I was surprised at what I found. It was unbelievable and, yet, the people were friendly. They wanted to talk. They wanted to share memories of being a teenager and listening to Elvis. Many were too young, like myself, to have been alive during Elvis' reign, but they had inherited their love for Elvis from their parents. One was there simply because his brother, who had died some years earlier, was an Elvis fan and he said he felt he could be closer to him this way.
It was amazing how much emotion went into this event. I interviewed a number of the people there including a few "Elvii" (best I could do for a plural form of Elvis). You can see the interviews and phenomenon here.

I live and grew up 60 miles south of Memphis. Memphis has become the 2nd most violent city in the USA. It is very sad, drugs have played a major role in the decline of this City. The City has cleaned up Beale Street and it is safe to go there. They need to work on the rest of the City. Take care Posted September 06, 2007 |
