Norcada is an innovative MEMS Design & Development company based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. MEMS, or micro-electro-mechanical-systems, are tiny devices often made in silicon using similar processes to semiconductor chips. The primary difference is that a MEMS device commonly has a mechanical actuating element, such as a cantilever, a tilting micro-mirror, or a moving membrane.

A MEMS device often has features that are only the size of a few microns! To put that in perspective, a human hair is usually about 60-100 microns thick, which is actually significantly larger than some MEMS features. Due to the extremely small scale of a MEMS design, it allows the device to be very precise in its sensing, measurements, and movements.
