Kilt Curiosity
There is no doubt that Scotland has charmed us. Universities and states now claim official tartans. Highland games abound with drummers and pipers in kilts and all the regalia. We are enchanted by the sound of a Scottish brogue. Novels about Scotland are popular and men in kilts, well, I'll let you decide for yourself about that.
Some Kilt History
The word kilt comes from the Scots word kilt, meaning to tuck up the clothes around the body. The Scots word derives from the Old Norse kjalta, from Norse settlers who wore a similar, non-tartan pleated garment.

How to wear a kilt
Learn exactly how to put on a kilt.
The kilt covers the body from the waist down to just above the knees. The overlapping layers in front are called "aprons" and are flat; the single layer of fabric around the sides and back is pleated. A kilt pin is fastened to the front apron on the free corner (but is not passed through the layer below). Underwear may or may not be worn, as the wearer prefers but in some circumstances underwear is prohibited by military regulations." Which may explain the picture below.

The Quintessential Man in a Kilt
Jamie Fraser from Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Series.
In Outlander, a 600-page time-travel romance, strong-willed and sensual Claire Randall leads a double life with a husband in one century, and a lover in another. Torn between fidelity and desire, she struggles to understand the pure intent of her heart. But don't let the number of pages and the Scottish dialect scare you. It's one of the fastest reads you'll have in your library.
Outlander
Absorbing and heartwarming, this first novel lavishly evokes the land and lore of Scotland, quickening both with realistic characters and a feisty, likable heroine. English nurse Claire Beauchamp Randall and husband Frank take a second honeymoon in the Scottish Highlands in 1945. When Claire walks through a cleft stone in an ancient henge, she's somehow transported to 1743. She encounters Frank's evil ancestor, British captain Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, and is adopted by another clan.
Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander, Book 2)
An engaging time-travel romance, the second of a trilogy (after Outlander, 1991), that animates the people and politics of a pivotal period in history--while turning up the heat between an appealing modern heroine and a magnetic romantic hero. It's now 1968, and Claire Beauchamp Randall has returned to Inverness, Scotland, with her daughter, Brianna.

The Texas Bluebonnet Tartan
"The Texas Bluebonnet Tartan was conceived and designed by June P. McRoberts. She designed a pattern to represent the state flower, the Bluebonnet, a member of the lupin family, which is widespread in many parts of Texas, using the colors and symmetry of the flower itself. She received much help and guidance from the Scottish Tartan Society Museum in Scotland and later registered the Bluebonnet Tartan with the STS Museum, the official register for tartans."Read the rest of the article HERE

- Excellent lens. I have scottish ancestry, many generations back, so the first time I went to Scotland, as a child, I tried to track down the appropriate tartan. I was sold a hat in the "correct" tartan (according to a shop keeper) which later turned out to be from a completely different clan.
