Kilt Curiosity

It has long been a subject for speculation. What do men wear under their kilts? I will shed some light on this. It seems that they do not wear tidy whities or tightie whities as the case may be.

There is no doubt that Scotland has charmed us. Universities and states now claim official tartans. Highland games abound with drummers and pipers in kilts and all the regalia. We are enchanted by the sound of a Scottish brogue. Novels about Scotland are popular and men in kilts, well, I'll let you decide for yourself about that.

Some Kilt History

The history of the kilt stretches back to at least the end of the 16th century. Although the kilt is an item of traditional Scottish highland dress, the nationalism of that tradition is relatively recent. It was only with the Romantic Revival of the early 19th century that the highland kilt was adopted by Lowlanders and the Scottish Diaspora as a symbol of national identity. People from other countries with Celtic connections, some Irish, Cornish, Welsh and Manx, have also adopted tartan kilts in recent times, although to a lesser degree. Similar clothing had long been abandoned by related cultures such as Gauls, and Scandinavians.

The word kilt comes from the Scots word kilt, meaning to tuck up the clothes around the body. The Scots word derives from the Old Norse kjalta, from Norse settlers who wore a similar, non-tartan pleated garment.

More on the kilt

The kilt is a knee-length garment with pleats at the rear, originating in the traditional dress of men and boys in the Scottish Highlands of the 16th century. Since the 19th century it has been associated with the wider culture of Scotland in general, or with Celtic (and more specifically Gaelic) heritage elsewhere. It is most often made of woollen cloth in a tartan pattern.

Though the Scottish kilt is most often worn mainly on formal occasions or at Highland Games and sports events, it has also been adapted as an item of fashionable informal, and formal, male clothing in recent years.

How to wear a kilt

Learn exactly how to put on a kilt.

"It is a tailored garment that is wrapped around the wearer's body at the natural waist (between the lowest rib and the hip) starting from one side (usually the wearer's left), around the front and back and across the front again to the opposite side. The fastenings consist of straps and buckles on both ends, the strap on the inside end usually passing through a slit in the waistband to be buckled on the outside; alternatively it may remain inside the waistband and be buckled inside.

The kilt covers the body from the waist down to just above the knees. The overlapping layers in front are called "aprons" and are flat; the single layer of fabric around the sides and back is pleated. A kilt pin is fastened to the front apron on the free corner (but is not passed through the layer below). Underwear may or may not be worn, as the wearer prefers but in some circumstances underwear is prohibited by military regulations." Which may explain the picture below.

The State of Texas has its own tartan.

The Texas Bluebonnet Tartan

"The Texas Bluebonnet Tartan was conceived and designed by June P. McRoberts. She designed a pattern to represent the state flower, the Bluebonnet, a member of the lupin family, which is widespread in many parts of Texas, using the colors and symmetry of the flower itself. She received much help and guidance from the Scottish Tartan Society Museum in Scotland and later registered the Bluebonnet Tartan with the STS Museum, the official register for tartans."
