Menomonie, Wisconsin, USA

Greetings from my new town, Menomonie. Menomonie is an interesting and diverse small mid-west town in Wisconsin. I wanted to share more about Menomonie, for travellers, friends and anyone else interested in fun places to visit!

Wisconsin's Dunn County and historic Menomonie have a lot to offer! There is so much to do for such a quaint little town. It is the ideal spot for the outdoor recreational types, with plenty of winter and summer activities. If you're more into shopping, sightseeing or eating, don't despair, there is plenty of that to share too!

Menomonie is also within an hour of the twin cities Minneapolis and St Paul, Minnesota, making it a popular holiday spot for city dwellers.

How Menomonie came to be...

Dunn County was formed out of a portion of Chippewa County on February 19, 1854. It's name was derived from Charles Dunn, first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Wisconsin territory, appointed by President Andrew Jackson in 1835.

Menomonie was formed in 1830 after lots of arguing amongst the American Indians and authorities in the area. Capt. William Wilson and John H. Knapp purchased a milling operation in 1846, essentially turning the small town into a thriving lumber town.

Menomonie is in Dunn County, which covers around 858 square miles. The ethnic background of the people here is mostly German and Norwegian.

Currently there are around 14,000 people who live in Menomonie, and about 60,000 altogether in Dunn County.

Menomonie is conveniently located 60 miles from the twin cities, 25 miles from Eau Claire and 200 miles from Madison.

Things to do in and around Menomonie

I wanted to share the coolest things to do while in Menomonie or Dunn County. Each activity has a website you can go to for further info!
  1. MABEL TAINTER THEATRE
You cannot miss out on this one. Easily takes Number 1 on the list. The Mabel Tainter Memorial Theater is a fully functional Victorian era theater built in 1889 with a year round performing arts season featuring nationally recognized artists. It is free to visit and photos are a must. They also have an art gallery showcasing local artists, as well as a small souviner shop. It is located at 205 Main Street, Menomonie (You can't miss it because it's the huge stone theatre!) Visit the website for more information.
  2. LEGACY CHOCOLATES
Bring an empty stomach. Legacy chocolates is a nationally-recognised and rewarded local chocolate making company. Now relocated to a new premises, Legacy chocolate sell 'cup-at-a-time' coffee, hand-made expressos, 20 kinds of hot chocolate, smoothies, iced teas and more. And don't let me get started on the home-made raspberry cream cheese chocolate brownies! Legacy's is a wonderful place to catch up with friends, or read a good book with a few hand-made chocolate truffles to munch on. www.legacy.com
  3. ZANZIBAR RESTAURANT
The best place in town! Also on Main Street, opposite the Mabel Tainter Theatre. They have amazing cocktails, tapa (small plated meals), as well as larger meals for a bigger appetite. All food is made with fresh local ingredients and is just delich! Locally owned and operated - support local!
  4. CRYSTAL CAVES
About a 20 min drive on Highway 29 you will find Crystal Caves in the quaint little town of Spring Valley.
  5. RED CEDAR RIVER TRAIL
The 14.5 mile Red Cedar State Trail follows the Red Cedar River from Menomonie to Dunnville where it joins with the 20 mile long Chippewa Valley Trail to Eau Claire.
The Red Cedar Trail, with its crushed limestone surface, is perfect year-round for hiking, biking or cross country skiing. Bike and ski rentals are available in Menomonie.
  6. PIONEER GRILL AND SALOON
Located on Tainter Lake just north of Menomonie in an intimate country setting with a friendly, fun and casual atmosphere. Full bar, dining room, game room, beer garden, huge outdoor patio w/ band stage, outdoor bar, live music on weekends. Featuring great comfort food at a reasonable price. Pioneer has hosted such bands as Neal McCoy, Sawyer Brown, Little River Band and Locash Cowboys to name a few!
  7. LAKE MENOMIN
Menomonie spreads itself around this beautiful lake. The lake was formed from a river which ran it's course through the town and helped transport logs for the lumberjacks. It is now a wonderful scenic lake for great fishing, boating, waterskiing, ice fishing and other winter activities.
  8. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - STOUT
Part of what makes our town so interesting is the student life! Not only that, the campus is very lovely to stroll around and makes for a nice summer afternoon walk. The clock tower is an icon of the town and UW-Stout campus is a place of beauty, history and character.

Great work! I think you've done a great job...though you might have better luck in the "local" category? It's great to hear a local's perspective who has actually been there.
