Fashion Trends In the 1700s
The styles of clothing for men during this time in history are quite different from what the men of today wear. The male gender paid attention to such terms as pagoda sleeves, fracs, and tricornes. What are these items, you may be asking. In the next few paragraphs I'll explain those terms and more that pertained to the styles of clothing worn in the Georgian Era by men.

The Redingote of the Georgian Era
Men would have normally used this part of their wardrobe for riding or traveling.
The redingote shown at the right also incorporates the pagoda style sleeves and a belt. It was a popular piece of attire for men around 1750 and saw many different variations as mens fashion changed over the decades.
Some clothiers would have referred to the coat at the right as a Greatcoat because it had the feature of the small collar that could be raised to protect the face from wind and the elements.
Why Is It Called The Georgian Era?
This era occurred during the reigns of Kings George I, II, and the beginning of George III in England which encompassed 1700 to 1790.

Georgian Hat Fashion
the tricorne
I am sure we have all seen the style of hat that men typically wore during the Georgian era known as the tricorne or tricorn hat. From the common man to men in the military and navy, these hats were worn for both style and practicality. The three corners of the hat were arranged in such a manner that the hat would gather rainwater and let it flow away from the gentleman's face. This hat came before there were garments created for rain gear. The Georgian hat shown above is from around 1780 and was made from the fur of a beaver.

- Interesting and fun topic. When I was teaching history, I often had students research fashion from a particular time period as a way of understanding the people and the era. Students tended to concentrate on women's fashions, but I like your emphasis on men's clothing.
