Fashion Trends In the 1700s

Have you ever wondered what men's fashions were like in the Georgian Era? What were the styles of clothing worn by the aristocrats, gentry and men of means during the time frame of 1700 to 1790?

The styles of clothing for men during this time in history are quite different from what the men of today wear. The male gender paid attention to such terms as pagoda sleeves, fracs, and tricornes. What are these items, you may be asking. In the next few paragraphs I'll explain those terms and more that pertained to the styles of clothing worn in the Georgian Era by men.

The Redingote of the Georgian Era

Georgian Era RedingoteRoughly between 1700 and 1790, known as the Georgian Era, mens fashion included a redingote as a part of the needed wardrobe. Sometimes it was also referred to as a Frock. In today's terms we might consider it an overcoat. The redingote was usually a coat with a collar, rather wide, and of a heavy material.

Men would have normally used this part of their wardrobe for riding or traveling.

The redingote shown at the right also incorporates the pagoda style sleeves and a belt. It was a popular piece of attire for men around 1750 and saw many different variations as mens fashion changed over the decades.

Some clothiers would have referred to the coat at the right as a Greatcoat because it had the feature of the small collar that could be raised to protect the face from wind and the elements.

Why Is It Called The Georgian Era?

This era occurred during the reigns of Kings George I, II, and the beginning of George III in England which encompassed 1700 to 1790.

I am sure we have all seen the style of hat that men typically wore during the Georgian era known as the tricorne or tricorn hat. From the common man to men in the military and navy, these hats were worn for both style and practicality. The three corners of the hat were arranged in such a manner that the hat would gather rainwater and let it flow away from the gentleman's face. This hat came before there were garments created for rain gear. The Georgian hat shown above is from around 1780 and was made from the fur of a beaver.

Trends Of Mens Fashion 1700s

Here in the United States we might refer to the Georgian Era as the Colonial Era as the colonies were being populated by Europeans at the time. Whether we refer to these trends in mens fashion as Georgian or Colonial the clothing is quite recognizable from the history books, novels, and movies that we can enjoy now.

Other typical fashions included:
  • Brodequin were a type of boot during the Georgian/Colonial Era
  • Cadogans were the wigs that had a short pony tail pulled back and held with a black ribbon
  • Cravat was the name of an ornamental type of neckwear
  • Engageantes were the cuffs of lace worn by both men and women and usually had two or three tiers to them
  • Habit was a term for a more formal wear that men might have worn when at the Court of the King or a fancy event
  • Waistcoat was made of a fine material for the front with a lining material in the back and was worn under a man's outer garment, much like a vest of today.

Interesting and fun topic. When I was teaching history, I often had students research fashion from a particular time period as a way of understanding the people and the era. Students tended to concentrate on women's fashions, but I like your emphasis on men's clothing.

Following the Georgian era of fashion was the Regency Era. Men's fashions really went through a revolution of sorts with styles changing from what had been worn before.
