Fashion Trends For Men During The Regency Era

As the Regency Era began to take hold in society from around 1795 to 1825 men's fashions followed suit. Men's clothing styles began to take on a new look with designs inspired by the French Revolution. Men also began to favor clothing from the equestrian way of life made popular by the English country gentlemen. Icons of fashion at the time were men like Beau Brummel who advocated that men should stir away from the bold and brilliant colors of the past and dress in a much more subtle manner.

Breeches that had been a part of mens fashion for nearly two centuries were replaced with pantaloons and trousers. Buckled shoes were out and laced shoes were in. High top hats and bicorne hats became the headgear for the fashionable gent.

What The Well Dressed Man Wore

in the presence of the Nobility in the Regency Era

men's court clothingDuring the Regency Era the mens fashion trend for the proper attire to be worn when visiting the nobility in the palaces, castles, and balls was really quite elegant. Breeches were still in favor for formal apparel, although most men favored the pantaloons and trousers for their every day clothing.

At the right we see a sample of mens fashion around 1800 that would have been perfect to wear in the King's presence. The red wool coat is embroidered with silver metallic thread with a matching waistcoat underneath. The breeches are a silk twill weave. The gentleman who wore this outfit chose a quite fancy cravat or neckcloth to adorn and finish off his attire.

Revolution In Mens Fashion

Beau Brummel c. 1805The Regency Era was actually a form of a revolution in mens fashion design. The younger gentlemen revolted from the attire chosen by their fathers and grandfathers. They became almost obsessed with clothing and appearance and were dubbed "dandies". These men favored a more somber and refined look to their clothing choices.

These young men wanted clean linen shirts with high collars, their cravats tied perfectly, and tailored dark jackets. They abandoned the wigs of their father's day and cut their hair short. These young "dandies" wore light colored pantaloons and trousers in the day and dark ones for evening wear. They wore gloves, carried canes, and liked tall conical shaped hats. Pocket watches and wallets became items that the well dressed man of fashion had on his person.

Shoes were no longer the buckled shoes of the past. Instead the men favored tall boots, light slip on shoes, and ankle high booties made of black or brown leather.

Please check your terminology. In the photo with the red "Coat" it is "Coat", not waistcoat, and entirely different thing. Men of that era did not wear vests, they wore "Waistcoats". Very nice suit 'tho.
