About Polo by Ralph Lauren
Rene Lacoste (of the "little crocodile" fame) created the first polo shirt to give tennis players a more comfortable collared shirt to wear in matches. Apart from having a loose collar that didn't need to be ironed down, the shirt was also made from knitted cotton, called pique. After Lacoste retired from professional tennis (in the 1930's) he started marketing the shirt in Europe and North America, calling his company Chemise Lacoste. Each shirt had a little crocodile emblem on the left breast. The name "polo shirt" comes from Lewis Lacey who in the 1920's designed buttoned down shirts for polo matches with the emblem of a polo player on the left breast. "Polo shirt" became the widely used term to describe the soft collar, knitted cotton shirt that tennis players, polo players (and golfers) use.
In 1972 Ralph Lauren designed a line called "Polo", and the polo shirt was a main feature of this line, making the shirt even more popular. Ralph Lauren wanted to exude stylishness and wealth in his clothes. He also added a logo similar to Lacoste's crocodile. This worked really well as a marketing tool and until today, Lacoste's tennis shirt is referred to as a "polo shirt" (even by tennis players).
