Men's Rights Movement vs. Feminism

Men's Rights Activists vs. Feminists: Which Side of the Battle are You On?
For decades, feminists have spoken out loudly against the biases and discrimination they face in the workplace, in education, and in achieving equal rights in society. They have spoken out to end abuse and to fight against a society that tends to blame the victim for sexual abuse and rape, instead of the rapist. Feminists have fought for the right to control what happens to their bodies, including the right to have an abortion. They believe we live in a patriarchal society and one which has been that way for centuries - if not thousands of years through the history of mankind.
The "Men's Rights Movement" (MRM) takes a different stance, and is in many ways a kind of anti-feminism. Men's rights activists (MRAs) believe we live in a matriarchal society that is constantly working to devalue the work, rights and humanity of men. They believe that men are not given equal rights as compared to women when it comes to custodial cases, divorce and alimony payments. They believe that women today are interested in "feminizing" and in a sense "emasculating" men by challenging the traditional roles of men in society - or, by expecting men to work and be the primary breadwinner in a family while the woman "sits at home and does nothing all day," reaping the benefits of her husband's hard labor.
Do you feel that the men's rights movement is correct in their positions? Or do you believe the MRM is a misguided and dangerous attack on the progress feminism has made in recent decades? Do we need to stop devaluing men in today's society, or are men so privileged they are simply lashing out at any attempts to challenge the patriarchy? Here is your chance to join the debate!

Defining Terms: Feminism vs. Men's Rights
Know Your Words Before Getting in to the Debate
-
Feminism
Wikipedia's definition of feminism begins as follows: "Feminism is a collection of movements aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights and equal opportunities for women. Its concepts overlap with those of women's rights. Feminism is mainly focused on women's issues, but because feminism seeks gender equality, some feminists argue that men's liberation is therefore a necessary part of feminism, and that men are also harmed by sexism and gender roles. Feminists are 'person[s] whose beliefs and behavior[s] are based on feminism.'"
For more on defining and understanding feminism, see the excellent Feminism 101 Guide at Shakesville. -
Men's Rights and the Men's Rights Movement (MRM, or MRA for "Men's Rights Activist")
Again going to Wikipedia, we see Men's Rights described as follows: "The term men's rights refers to freedoms and rights of boys and men. This term is specifically related to focusing on rights which are protected for girls and women of all ages, yet inadequately protected for boys and men of all ages, and fall within the broader context of human rights. In essence, this term refers to human rights and dignity for men. Men's Rights relates to the role of men in contemporary society. Traditionally, this role has been largely influenced by the physical attributes of the man in his ability to provide protection and sustenance to his partner and offspring. This role, and the rights relating to it, has changed over time due to social, legal and religious influences. Various groups and movements have emerged in an effort to clearly define this role. The Men's Rights Movement (MRM) is concerned with the legal and societal rights of men, primarily in Western cultures. This includes disparity in conviction, sentencing, custody, matrimonial and alimony laws, as well as the alleged discrimination and degradation of males. -
Matriarchy
From Dictionary.com:
1. a family, society, community, or state governed by women.
2. a form of social organization in which the mother is head of the family, and in which descent is reckoned in the female line, the children belonging to the mother's clan; matriarchal system.
Origin: 1880-85; matri- + -archy -
Patriachy
From Dictionary.com:
1. a form of social organization in which the father is the supreme authority in the family, clan, or tribe and descent is reckoned in the male line, with the children belonging to the father's clan or tribe.
2.a society, community, or country based on this social organization.
Origin: 1555-65; < Greek patriarchÃa.
Question: Do we live in a patriarchy or matriarchy?
Who holds all the power in today's society?
What's your opinion? Is today's society, in the Western world, more of a matriarchy or a patriarchy? Who is really in charge, the men or the women?
Do you feel we live in a patriarchal or matriarchal world today?

It's a patriarchal world - men have all the privilege.
sousababy says:
Patriarchal - evidenced by women still only earning (at best) around 75% for every dollar that a man makes. Women have higher costs of living too (requiring 20 - 25% more for clothing, makeup & toiletries) and single mothers and elderly women have an almost doubled need of their current income (and this is in 2012)!
clairewalsh says:
I agree with Sockil, people do not even see the day to day privilege that men have. I see the opposing viewpoint regarding being forced to join the military as a male, but that is not in every society. For instance, in Israel, everyone has to serve. I believe in the volunteer-based system.
sockii says:
I believe we absolutely live in a patriarchal world. It is so insidious that many times we don't even see how gender bias is ingrained into our minds and how we choose to value men's works over women's, and how much women have to fight for every bit of recognition, freedom and privilege that men take for granted.
It's a matriachal world - women have all the privilege.
doodle says:
There is a reason why the suicide rate is exponentially higher in men than women.
Paul says:
on the face of it,you would think that it's a patriarchal world, and the assumption here is to explain the achievements of men,we need to see them as privileged.
putting this aside and looking at it from the state/government/society/laws and regulation angle;it's a MATRIARCHY.
1.while feminists were demanding (whining for) equality, they didn't actually want equality, while asking the federal government to provide equal funds to female and males in education, especially in sport, ignoring that the deference in the gender leads to a differences in interests and needs, they forgot that the government spends 6 times more on females than males, this lack of self reflection and some sort of dishonesty struck me first when looking into feminism.
2.another,example is women study, while we don't have men's study, this is a clear form of government discrimination.this was rectified by changing the name to gender study, but it's still actually women's study, another feminists lie.
3.quotas,while feminists declared that they are equal and seek equality, they were asking for quotas.this disingenuous behavior is another aspect of this movement and thus a female firefighter will get the job even though that she's not qualified while the qualified male will lose the opportunity to peruse his dream.
4.the criminal law when applied doesn't achieve justice,a female in the UK prepared Napalm (or substance similar to Napalm) and burned her
husband, she was sentence to 3.5 years,if that was a man then for sure a life time in jail, moreover she was awarded by feminists including Cherie Blair;in this day an age where we show compassion toward animals feminists failed to reach a decent level of humanity to condemn such acts.
5.family laws when applied, don't serve justice but injustice.
the presumption of the court is that the best interest of the child is having the mother, while the true assumption is having access to both the father and the mother, again the legislators were not objects but misguided by their bias to the female of the specie and thus equality was ignored for the false assumption and at no point the interest of the father was taken into consideration, given that the court will not release the father from his responsibilities to provide while violating his rights as a human (father).
6.Domestic violence ,all the regulations assumes that the victim is the woman and the perpetrator is the man and thus show a clear discrimination to the point that the police will remove a bleeding man as a suspect of DV while all the evidence points to his innocence, furthermore, the most of the times the police will not answer if the caller (victim) is the man.
6.A.Police statistics are manipulated to hide the fact that there is at least equal violence perpetrated by women,if not more;a case in London Ontario where a women killed her X-boyfriend because he broke up with her the day before the indecent was not counted as DV not even homicide and the stats released by the police station indicated that all homicides involving intimate partners were against women (1 case) while if this case was counted and others that we may not know about then it will be 50%-50%.
I believe that we live in a MATRIARCHY that hates or at least dislikes men and shows that bu biased laws and regulations.
Mary says:
It is unwise for anyone to choose a side as both feminism and the MRM/MRA are both radical movements marked in making their "Side" rule supreme. With that said, Feminism as gone too far in decrying the misdeeds of men. The current laws are bent in favor of women and their "issues." My advice to anyone with a brain would be to look at all gender situations carefully. If it is not ok to make the woman the butt of a joke, then it is not ok to make a man the butt of a joke is a mild example. If a man should not "put a woman in her place" then it is not proper for a woman to "put a man in his place" The MRA/MRM says they seek to make these things more equal, but if we are to learn of our fatal mistakes with feminism then anything seeking the sole benefit of men should be seen with the same suspicious eye as things only benefiting women. There are inequalities towards men that could not exist without feminism. However both moments seek to make things equal that are biologically or biblical (no matter what one's belief is) unable to be compared. Women as a gender have a set of strengths and weaknesses that men compliment and compensate for and men have a set of strengths and weaknesses women compliment and compensate for. When we ignore this truth the whole of society suffers for it. There are exceptions because there always must be, but as a general whole, men and women compliment each other when they are working together instead of against each other.
mcorrison says:
is socki aware that in many european countries, all boys are forced to join the military when they are 18 , or they go to jail?
and that in many of the same countries, women get to retire 5 years younger for full pension?

Which side of the debate gets it right: the Men's Rights Movement, or the Feminists?

The Men's Rights Movement
Chris says:
Feminists have never really wanted equality. While most of us grew up with the notion that feminism meant being for true equality between all people, I think it has been clearly obvious during the internet age that this was a big lie from the start.
When feminists routinely and actively promote laws that benefit and protect 51% of the population they clearly expose themselves to be an anti-male hate group.
From child custody, sexual harassment, false rape claims, alimony, car insurance, health care, marriage, dating, affirmative action, domestic violence, child abuse, and the proverbial "glass ceiling" to wage gap myth amongst many other categories it all favors women over men to a high level.
Just take a look at our culture. Lat year Sharon Osbourne (National television, CBS "The Talk") laughed profusely at a man having his genitals mutilated because his wife didn't like the fact that he wanted a divorce. The audience laughed right along with her. Did CBS do anything??? Nope not a thing.
Now imagine the women replaced with men. The topic: a woman being raped. Can you imagine the hell they would receive? Fired immediately and the show would have been pulled from the air.
Just 1 example of how "It's sexist only when men do it." Feminism created that culture and someone needs to end it.
Ed says:
I am with the MRA's. Feminist have failed to embrace true equality due to their insatiable appetite for victim hood. They not only desire a monopoly it, but present that monopoly as the starting point for every debate. The great irony is the white women of the movement who go around attacking white males as if they some how magically segregated themselves outside of the culture they are so critical of by virtue of their genitalia. The notion of the oppressed white women should be considered equal to the white oppressed man.
In reality there are individuals being victimized by established social conventions in every segment of humanity. Until we learn to appreciate the suffering of everyone we will have to do the tedious work of swinging the pendulum back and forth until everyone has been recognized as a human being capable of experiencing injustice and pain. True humanism will come one day, but feminism alone won't get us there.
Feminists
sousababy says:
Since I had to pick a side, I choose 'Feminists' however you are correct to identify that many of us do not like this word because of the negative connotations associated with it. I prefer to call myself a humanitarian - since we are all members of the human race. Feminism is really about equality . . just wish the word didn't get peoples' backs up.
sockii says:
I am a feminist. I believe that while much has been accomplished to improve the position and status of women in today's society, there is still so much more yet to be done. Of course there are extremists in every movement which can give that group a "bad name", feminists and MRAs both. But as a whole I believe strongly in the feminist movement and that it is necessary to help protect women's rights to equal opportunity, fair pay, reproductive rights, autonomy and health. We cannot take a step backward by somehow denying that the patriarchy still exists as it has for so much of mankind's history.

- Tell you the truth, in my careers . . I have found men to be more 'open' to my ambitions than women. When I studied prosthetics (making artificial limbs) and was purchasing my tools, women would say, 'Oh those aren't for you, are they?' Or they'd laugh when I told them I could weld. Odd, I know . . . some feminists happen to be male.
