Buying Mens Tailored Shirts

What you need to know

How often do you find the perfect shirt? You know the one - shows off your best features, makes you look slimmer or fuller (depending on what you're looking for!), tucks in perfectly, doesn't crease, collar is just right, sleeves the right length. The perfect shirt can make you look a million dollars and not only that, it is a sure fire way to get on the best dressed list in the office or out at a bar. With the emergence of online tailors, you can now choose everything imaginable... and for cheaper than you think. Owning a mens tailored shirt is the best investment you will ever make and you won't go back to buying off the rack, trust me!

Mens Tailored Shirts - The Fabric

Tips in choosing the right fabric

Choosing the right fabric is probably the most important choice so let's start off here. There are so many options when it comes to fabrics and my biggest advice is to choose the fabric you feel, best suits you. Sometimes when people are custom making their first shirt, you choose bold patterns and colours which may not always suit you and you end up disappointed when it arrives. My suggestion is to take a look through your wardrobe and see what patterns you seem to most regularly buy. These are the fabrics that you feel most comfortable in and obviously suit you best. There is no harm in trying some of the more adventurous patterns once you have your cut sorted but i would suggest walking into a store near you before making any drastic colour decisions.

Mens Tailored Shirts - The Fit

How to choose the right fit and measure yourself

As i mentioned before with the fabric, it's best to go with a shirt fit that you already know suits you. Remember, a custom tailor will be fitting this shirt to the exact measurements of your body so we are just choosing the fit your prefer at this stage. There are three different shirt fits you need to know about:

FITSLIMFIT

Tailored / Slim fit - this fit is most flattering on someone who is straight up and down. They are highly tailored all over to pull in at all the right places. When the shoulder is the right measurement, it can make them look much broader in comparison to your waist giving you a nice V-shape. The are best suited to the more slimmer / athletic man.

FITNORMALFIT

Regular fit - I say regular for lack of a better word as when you have it custom made to you, there is nothing regular about it! These shirts provide extra room whilst still maintaining a tailored look. They are best suited to the more athletic to solid build.

FITLOOSEFIT

Loose fit - When tailored, they simply add more to the shoulder and side measurements you give them ensuring a more comfortable fit for those with a larger build and girth

Mens Tailored Shirts - Measuring Yourself

Tips on measuring yourself

As I have mentioned throughout this page, I prefer to go off a favourite shirt when I am getting a custom shirt made. It just means that I know the finished product is going to fit just right. When creating your mens tailored shirts, most online tailors will ask you to supply them with your measurements, or those of your favourite shirt. All of the online tailors I recommend at the bottom show you how to take these measurements. It might take you 10mins or so and you will need a measuring tape (someone to help you is best if you want to take your body measurements) but those few minutes will result in the best fitting shirt you've ever had!

Mens Tailored Shirts - The Options

All of the extras you can't choose when you buy off the rack

This is where things get really exciting - you can customise your shirt in so many different ways! From collar to cuff, placket to pleat. With so many options available, I'm not going to go into any great detail as you're better of looking through the options yourself. Below are the options available when tailoring your mens shirt.

Collar - personally, I think after the fit, the collar is the most important choice. Everyone has their own choice of course but if you are wearing a suit jacket, a medium buttoned down collar looks great.

Cuffs - you can have any cuff you like. Round, square, french, one button, two buttons or perhaps you prefer wearing cuff links?

Pockets - do you like your shirt with pockets? Perhaps round, square or v-cut? Just the one or two?

Placket - do you prefer your shirts with a placket (the strip where the buttons are), no placket or a covered placket (buttons covered)?

Back - again, lot's of options here! Plain, darts, side pleats or box pleats?

Buttons & Button thread - any particular colour your prefer?

Bottom - round, straight, cut or straight cut?
