All these questions and there are millions like it are just a few of the sensory inputs that we take for granted. So what? Sensory input is how we know about the world, how we know what birds sound like, how we know grass is green and how we know if something is hot or cold.Your senses make your world.
How does this relate to playing better golf?
There is a long, drawn out scientific explanation for that but as we are golfers and not psycologists let me just say that your brain is wonderful but not infallible. The sensory input it recieves determines how it relates that input to the real world.
Just like the phone company that tells you the computer made a mistake when it sent you a bill for five thousand dollars when the mistake was the input it received from the intern who was having a lazy day. Computers rarely if ever make mistakes they just process the input.

Does this story help me play better golf?
You betcha! The brain processes input from your senses but being the wet mass it is it can't really tell if that input is real or not. The amputee who can feel a limb that is not there or the mouth watering effect of a good food advert are examples of how the brain can be fooled into accepting false data.
How does this make me play better golf?
By giving the old noggin some info you can make it believe that data is correct and this is where the beauty of this concept works. Visualisation is a technique widely recognised in the scientific world. For example a group of people were given exercises to do, one section trained and rested as per the usual advice but another section trained, rested and then visualised doing more exercises. The result? the section who visualised the extra training built more muscle mass. The brain thought they were exercising more and so told the body to grow more muscle.

Improve your golf by visualising it.
To get the most out of this method the visualisation must be as detailed as you can possibly make it. It would be of no benefit to merely think "I am standing on the tee and , wow what a great shot I have hit."
How To Do It
First start by relaxing, find a warm quiet place and stretch your body one part at a time until you have released the tension in it. Picture the tee, see the colours of the grass, trees, the tee markers. Imagine yourself bending to place your tee, what colour is it? what make of ball are you playing? how have you marked it? See the club in your hand, feel the weight of it and make a few swings, notice the noise it makes in the air. Address the ball, are you going to fade the ball or draw it?, feel the ground under your feet, notice the pressure in your thigh as you swing, hear the sound as club strikes ball and notice your finish position. In your mind see the ball do exactly as you intended it to do, hear it land on the fairway and see it roll.
You can and should add as much detail to this scene as you possibly can and your mind will accept it as fact. You can if you have time play a whole round of golf in this fashion and the more you practice the more of a real memory it will become and you will play better golf.
