How To Maintaining Good Mental Health

There are a number of issues of mental health that affect women. These issues range from anxiety and depression to even suicide. In addition to this, there are certain psychiatric illnesses that affect women. The effects of mental health on women are different from that on men.  In order to understand the issue of mental health it is necessary to know its causes. We should be aware of the diagnosis and the treatment available. The ways to prevent depression are important. Information regarding these factors has been given in this article.

 

Women may get affected by postpartum depression. This refers to the depression occurring after childbirth. However, this depression is not permanent. It does not have adverse effects. It usually, reduces after sometime. There are certain specific symptoms of depression. These include losing interest in events which includes sex. Other symptoms include feeling restless or irritable. The person may feel guilty, helpless, pessimistic, worthless, etc. She might have very little sleep or excessive sleep. She may have thoughts of attempting suicide. In order to treat depression, antidepressants may be prescribed. Psychotherapy can prove to be a useful treatment. 

 

Anti-anxiety medicine is used for treating depression. Stimulants can also be used. Another form of treatment would include undergoing sessions with a therapist. Alternative treatments for depression can prove useful. Women can also get affected by anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorder can be in the form of panic attack or an obsessive compulsive disorder. Women can experience phobias in the form of social anxiety. Women suffer from anxiety disorders more than men. Life can become very difficult due to anxiety disorders. There is continuous interruption in life due to anxiety.

 

However, treatment is available for anxiety disorders. It is advisable to undergo immediate treatment. Otherwise it can become worse. Anxiety disorders are of different types. A common anxiety disorder among women is Generalized Anxiety Disorder. This disorder begins during childhood. It has been found that this order is found in families. Another type is the obsessive compulsive disorder. Here the person experiences thoughts that keep repeating. Obsessions are common in this disorder. The person experiences compulsion. Panic Disorder is a type of anxiety disorder. Panic attacks occur frequently to people suffering from panic disorder. Women experience panic disorders more than men. Another anxiety disorder is a phobia. It is an abnormal fear. These are some of the mental health issues that affect women.

The symptoms for depression in both women and men are the same. The only difference is the way they express it. Some of the symptoms in men are insomnia, lack of concentration, fatigue, irritation etc. They also experience lack of interest in their work place or any other social activities.

As mentioned earlier, more number of women are seen visiting psychiatrist for depression related problem. However instead of seeking for medical help, men tend to engage themselves in various other activities. They try to do other activities by which they can forget the root cause of their depression. Some of these may not be healthy. Such activities are working more than usual, consuming alcohol excessively. Some men take the extreme steps of indulging in drugs or driving recklessly. These are some of the ways men use to cope up with the situation. It is well known that women attempt suicide more than men do. But statistics show that the number of men committing suicide in USA is four times than that of women.

Whatever may be the reason for your depression, it should be given proper treatment. For this, the first thing is that men should come forward and voice out their feelings in open. Self initiative is the best help. Other than that you should try for psychotherapy, or counseling. If possible look around for a support group nearby. You can also try going for a Psychotherapeutic work. It can be done individually or in a group. The advantage of doing it in a group is that you are motivated in an environment where there are several other suffering like you. You can help each other come out of the depression and face the challenge together.
  1. You can consult your doctor for antidepressant medication.
  2. You can try different kinds of medicines and see which one can get rid of the depression.
  3. In rare cases or in emergencies, it is recommended to go for ECT (electroconvulsive therapy).
  4. If you are feeling suicidal do talk about it to someone. There are many organizations, doctors, physicians who are working for the same cause. You can seek help from any one of them.
