Literacy Volunteers in Mercer County

Founded in 1979, Literacy Volunteers in Mercer County (LV-MC) trains, coordinates, and supports the efforts of a dedicated group of volunteer literacy tutors. Their volunteers provide free, confidential literacy tutoring services to adult residents of Mercer County at a variety of locations including the public libraries, workplace sites, churches, and retirement homes. LV-MC provides comprehensive training in the skills necessary to teach and motivate adult students.They are committed to enabling adults with limited literacy proficiencies to achieve personal, job-related, community, and family-oriented goals. The organization provides periodic tutor training, utilizing and supporting volunteers in the delivery of free services.

The mission and passion of Magazine Publishers Family Literacy Project is to build an enormous literacy pipeline and to challenge the citizens of the world to fill it with magazines.With your support, Magazine Publishers Family Literacy Project sends new and recycled magazines to new readers -- moms and kids in domestic violence and homeless shelters, youth in mentoring and job training programs, and other community literacy programs.
Magazine Publishers Family Literacy Project is the first and only family literacy project with global, magazine industry-wide ambition. Their mission is to create a vibrant literacy marketplace that shares the magic and power of magazine reading with at-risk children and families who want to learn and love to read.

Young Scholars' Institute
Trenton, NJ
Young Scholars' Institute (YSI), a nonprofit year-round learning center for Trenton area children in grades K-12, was established in 1990 by Executive Director Jerri L. Morrison, a former teacher, with financial assistance from the Harbourton Foundation. YSI is the culmination of the commitment and dedication of Ms. Morrison, her staff, the Board of Trustees and two hundred volunteers from the community.Guided by a ten-member Board of Trustees, Young Scholars' Institute provides innovative programs for approximately 1,200 school children annually. These programs and services include one-to-one tutoring, SAT preparatory courses, enrichment classes, college tours and college admissions workshops, reading and writing workshops, and so much more! The "scholars" are taught by experienced teachers and tutored by adults, college, and high school volunteers.
