Mercury Cougar - The Ford Mustang's Luxury Counterpart

The Mercury Cougar was introduced in 1967 as a more luxurious option for people who wanted the engine and other mechanical parts featured in the Ford Mustang. These cars did not look at all like the Ford Mustang, but the first generation Cougars were in fact based off the same platform as the second generation Ford Mustangs.

Along with the base model Mercury Cougar, there was also a XR7 luxury model. For those looking for more performance from their Cougar, both the base and XR7 models had a GT option, which included the 390 engine.

A Mercury Cougar convertible was introduced in 1969. The car was redesigned in 1971, perhaps because Mercury didn't feel like selling anymore of these cars. All kidding aside, the redesigned Cougar was a hideous beast. It looked huge, even though it was slightly smaller than the 1970 model. There was also a very rare engine option on these cars: the Cobra Jet 429.

One very rare and collectible version of the early Mercury Cougars is the Mercury Cougar Eliminator. Some of these have sold at auction for over $100,000.

Dodge Charger - The Big American Muscle Car
The Dodge Charger is the epitome of the American muscle car. It's big, it's loud, it's fast. The original Charger was sold from 1966 until 1978. It was revived as a front wheel drive compact car in the 1980's, and then again as a return to its roots in 2006. Let's just forget that the 80's L-body Ch

The Chevrolet Chevelle was Chevy's first entry into the muscle car niche, although determining the exact point at which this car became true Detroit muscle is debatable, we do know that the car was produced from 1964 until 1977.
Pontiac GTO - The World's First Muscle Car
The Pontiac GTO was introduced in 1964, and it is now widely recognized as the first muscle car. In the years that followed, every major American automaker began using the same concept that Pontiac an used in the GTO: cram a powerful engine in a relatively light car frame. The original GTO would be
Chevrolet Camaro
The Chevrolet Camaro was created by General Motors to compete with the Ford Mustang. The Mustang fell between a traditional sports car and a comtemporary car. General Motors did not have any cars that matched up well with it from its introduction in 1964 until 1967. The Corvette was too sporty and t

The Plymouth Barracuda started out as a simple A-body in 1964, but by the time it was switched over to an E-body for 1970 it was one of the most powerful muscle cars on the road.
