U.S. Winged Liberty Dime

The Winged Liberty silver dime was designed by noted sculptor Adolph A. Weinman and produced by the United States Mint from 1916 to 1945. The obverse or front of the coin depicts a bust of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap that is intended to represent liberty and freedom and freedom of thought. The reverse side of the coin features an ax surrounded by a tied bundle of sticks referred to as a Roman fasces and an olive branch.

This coins design reminded the general public of the Roman Messenger God Mercury and the coin quickly became referred to as the Mercury or Mercury Head dime. Mercury dimes are very popular with U.S. coin collectors and most dates with a few exceptions are can be found with little difficulty.
