Mermaid Paintings and Drawings - Fantasy Art by Flynn the Cat

Mermaids are one of the staples of fantasy - throughout history, myth and legend they've appeared in various terrifying and alluring forms, in art and story. This trend still continues today, with a mermaid lurking in the gallery of almost every fantasy artist.
Including me. This lens collects all my mermaid pictures - scary, lovely, fierce or odd, ArtRage-painted or drawn in traditional pencil. I hope you enjoy them, and I intend to paint more.

I never really planned on being a 'mermaid artist' - actually, considering how many other things I paint, I'm not. But one day I turned aound and realised I had enough mermaid paintings to say 'I can paint mermaids. Here.' Something that also happened with my cat paintings and dragons and people...

Mermaids have been around for hundreds and hundreds of years since the first goddess walked into a like and turned into a fish with legs and a human head. From the sirens who haunted early sailors, to Hans Christian Andersen's soulless and ethereal Ariel, to the cuteified Disney version of The Littl

Morning Flight by Flynn the Cat: Mermaid at sunset

Mermaids: Scary or Sweet?

Sterotypes or Archetypes?

There are so many different kinds of mermaids written and drawn about nowadays. Some are the same deadly sirens of old, some are sweet and innocent - such as Disney's Ariel - some are half human, some are strange fish creatures. While the sultry siren or the pretty fishgirl have appeal, I find the unusual and unique versions more interesting - and often more realistic! (For example, gills, claws and teeth)

Should mermaids be traditional and beautiful or strange and unusual?

I prefer traditional mermaids

caitlyn says:

i think they should be beatiful and have blue and green tails

cffutah says:

I hope they are traditional and not some deadly fish that is going to spew poison on me and burn me into a pulp.

Amelia7410 says:

I like the traditional ones but I do like your blue water mermaid too!

i belive they are a mix of beauty and evil

I like my mermaids different

Nothing wrong with beautiful AND strange and unusual! .. Strange and unusual in a beautiful way ;)

Mermaids for me are one of those mystical creatures and should be as diverse as nature

The mermaid with fierce red hair is my favorite.

You are talented, I love your work.

Shore

Shore by =Flynn-the-cat

I was meant to be writing up a synopsis for my journal readings about sperm distribution (limitation vs competition) for species with external fertilisation, in the sea.
Instead I draw a naked mermaid.

I swear there is no connection. And I still have to do my homework.

Also! Reflecting sand! And I know the starfish is kinda cliche, but I needed something *right there*
And look! Sunrises are pretty but so very easy, and I didn't copout - instead I drew something different, a foggy grey day...

How To Draw Mermaids - Choosing the Tail Fins

What kind of tail should the mermaid have?

Decisions - A green skinned mermaid painting in progress

This mermaid is very recent - January 2010. She was referenced from the photo of a ballet dancer (and was originally going to be a realism painting, but I decided she looked like a mermaid).

She is nowhere near finished - I am deciding what kind of tail to give her.

The traditional tail is the fish tail - like Zeb's Mermaid or the fishlike silver mermaid in As Day begins. Everyone recognises it, and yet... fish tail fins sweep from side to side and although the length of the tail makes it hard to tell which way is up, most traditional mermaid tails move up and down, in the form of a whale tail.

So, direction is one issue. Another is where along the body of the tail the fins should join - as you can see in the top two sketches either side of the mermaid above.

Lastly there's the one I think of as the 'kelp' tail, or eel-like tail - which I used for Blue Waters and am very fond of. The downside of this one is that it's not very strong and wouldn't afford much propulsion when swimming. This makes the composition a little harder in the image above, where she's obviously thrusting upwards using the power of her tail.

An update 5th March 2010
I actually finished this but had a computer disaster when adding the background - the file may be recoverable, but in the meantime... I add wings, a wave and a rainbow tail! There is a poster, but personally I think the lack of background works better on the t-shirt.

Which Kind of Tail Do You Think I Should Use?

Shallow Fish - Closeup from Blue Waters

I'll be honest and admit that what I think I should do, or what you tell me to do, may not be what I paint - but nevertheless, I'll bear it in mind!

Mermaid Tales from Around the World

Amazon Price: $117.64 (as of 02/14/2012)Buy Now

Of the 12 tales, only Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" is very well known. The other entries come from around the world and from different times-ancient Greece to 19th-century America. As Osborne points out in her introduction, these selections feature strong heroines who just happen to have fish tails. Being magical creatures, some can offer wealth and happiness; others can become human, marry, and have children; and a few are evil and vengeful. This rich collection is further enhanced by thoughtfully designed color plates and page decorations. Each picture furthers the understanding of the story through content and style (e.g., authentic African patterns are used to decorate the Nigerian tale, while the Greek tale is accompanied by artwork influenced by the area's terra-cotta pottery). An anthology that will enrich any collection.

Waterborn

A Fiercer Sort Of Mermaid

There are many stories of dragons. Wild, blatant fancies and ancient legends of fire and eggs, mist and flame. Of taloned mosters and reptilian mages. Of cunning wyrms and low, crawling beasts. Some tell of mute, ferocious animals, children of earth and flesh. Others proclaim sly creatures of darkness, lurking venom and cruelly slitted eyes. Yet others laud the gracefully scaled spirits of the air, the bright and majestic roaring flames, the shining talons, the clever speeches and shining hoards...

This is not one of those.

This is the Child of the Sea, who melds with water, and flows with the waves. This is the Daughter of Salt, shining and precious, invisible in the vast seas and yet hidden in every drop. This is the seadragon, who brings the water to life with her turbulence, creating kinspirits from the froth and foam of her passing, and from sleek shining water, and the glimmer of sunlight on a droplet forms her scales...
This is the leaping splash that startles sailors, the dancing krakenmaid flying out with the spray.
Old, old and deep as the seas, resting in the dark waters before the first fish formed from her tiny kin, and young, young and new formed with every wave.

Everywhere and nowhere, she leaps up, dragging forth wings out of waves, dancing on the swells, whirls and rises and falls, crashing water, shining scales...

You will never see her. Be grateful for a quiet life.

Blue Waters is one of those 'painted for me and became scarily popular' pictures. It's also one of the ones that people tend to buy from me - as posters, mugs and jigsaw puzzles (which really surprised me!)

I love the atmosphere and it's painted completely in blues - I had a devil of a time getting the CMYK print colours right though! Too much adjustemnt one way and it was purple, andother and there were greens burning themselves into the painting!

I also learnt how to paint bubbles for this - the large ones take a very long time, and you have to remember to add all the reflections of the colours around. And I added the fish for fun!

Can You See the Whale?

A New Dawn - traditional art mermaid by Flynn the CatThis is the first traditional mermaid I ever painted. The inspiration for this was gentle suggestion from a friend, who's very fond of mermaids. well, I say inspiration... I mean marching orders!
Very much a 'fun' painting, I drew on my personal memories of playing in the surf, and my knowledge of fish and dolphins to plan out the sweep of the tail. Apparently this worked better than I realised - for looking at this the right way, she look looks like a whale or dolphin surfacing!

Painted in mid-July, 2008, I repainted the face a year later. As you can see, it's a huge difference!

Shortly after that, I was relearning how to draw traditionally and redrew this mermaid from memory, using prismacolor pencils and black paper. You can see the result on the above right, in the imaginatively named A New Dawn which went to the lady I originally painted the first version for (she wanted something traditional, rather than digital).

You can buy this as poster on Zazzle.

Ivory Keys

And she played on the bones of the dead...

The problem with the proliferation of Disney's Ariel is that she's pretty much monopolised the 'red hair and green tail' combination. Which is a shame. I started painting a mermaid and realsied partway that she now looked like Ariel, and decided to take her in the other direction.

Ivory Keys was what resulted.

I never actually finished this, and maybe I'll come back one day...

A Survival Guide for Landlocked Mermaids

Amazon Price: $12.89 (as of 02/14/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $16.00

The landlocked mermaid is a symbol of the contemporary woman, trapped in a paradoxical dilemma of being part worldly and domesticated, part untamableand intuitive. In A Survival Guide for Landlocked Mermaids, artist Margot Datz sees the she-nymph within, struggling to emerge, and in a swirl ofwhimsical and witty wisdom, lovingly offers tips for today's world of dating, mating, and beyond.

Margot's beautifully painted, contemporary mermaids are caught in the nets of their own comical dilemmas, circling the heart's fishbowl of romantic longingsand in the murky depths of deep emotion. Whether it's the value of cultivating an inner water garden or coping with crow's feet and fish tails, Margot offersadvice and an enchanting way of hydrating your weary mermaid soul.

Coy, sweetly mischievous, and a pinch sagacious, this is a book that, like a good glass of wine, can be enjoyed multiple times, sipped on, or downed in onereading.

As Day Begins

A silver mermaid....

As the sun rises over the sea.

As Day Begins was in response to a prompt to paint a 'mystical' place. I painted it all in silvers and shadows, then added washes of bright colour for a dramatic sunrise - then changed my mind and went with gentle silver with a few hints of colour creeping through the sky and reflecting off the water... and green in the tail of course.

"[A] distillation of a decade of exploration, magnificently illustrated and eloquently written. Some will treasure World Ocean Census as a valuable reference, others as a place to find white-knuckle adventures."
-- From the foreword by Sylvia Earle

An insider's description of the comprehensive Census of Marine Life and what it reveals about a seriously threatened ecosystem.
The Census of Marine Life was launched in 2000 with the goal of producing the first-ever ocean census by 2010. Two thousand scientists from 82 nations agreed to the mandate to answer three important questions:

* What once lived in the global ocean?
* What is living there now?
* What will live there in the future?

This book deals with the adventures and experiences of the Census of Marine Life and the process of gathering the data, revealing the stories behind the science. The authors detail the most fascinating findings and exciting discoveries -- the thrills encountered and the difficulties overcome -- all illustrated with fabulous images captured during the project's explorations.
The text readily engages the reader, and the photographs are as beautiful as they are accurate. The information is comprehensive, compelling and current, and it represents an enormous group effort by some of the world's leading scientists.

My Painting Program

All About ArtRage

Anyone who's glanced over my list of lenses has probably seen the large number of 'Artrage' related ones, so I won't bore you all again here. If you haven't heard of it, it's the digital painting program I use to paint most of my pictures with and I love it. It's wonderful, a fraction of the price of Photoshop and brilliant for anyone who likes just playing with paint rather than constantly editing and tweaking settings.

If you haven't heard of it and want to learn a bit more this lens will tell you as much as I remembered to write down and links to the others. It's the first one I actually made on Squidoo and I'm still fond of it.

List Price: $49.99

Some other people's opinions:

"ArtRage is a natural media digital art software with several very nice features, some challenging those of Painter and Photoshop. The first thing that I liked was the software's graphic user interface or workspace. Given the number of features and the amount of controls to customize the tools, you would expect a complicated and intimidating GUI similar to that of Painter or Photoshop. Instead, you have an uncluttered workspace with only six panels bordering the edges. Also, as you are working, these few panels automatically disappear out of the way as your brush approaches and reappear again as you move your brush away. Other nice features are a rotating canvas and pen tablet support. ArtRage can import and export several image formats including JPEG, BMP, PNG and PSD.

Those artists who begin their artwork by blocking out the major shapes and colors in their painting will appreciate ArtRage's Tracing Image feature. This feature allows you to import a photo or sketch as a starting point for your painting. ArtRage projects the imported tracing image onto the canvas and you can control the scale and opacity of the image. For example, while tracing the outline of a rose with the Pencil tool, I set the opacity to around 80% which allowed me to see the details clearly. Later when I began to add color, I lowered to opacity to about 30% to create an "onion skin" of the trace image. For artists who like to paint from a reference image, ArtRage allows you to "pin" a reference image or images directly on to the canvas. Once the reference image is pinned to the workspace, you can reposition the image next to the area you are working on.

ArtRage has two ways to work with color; Trace Color and Normal Color. Trace Color is a feature which takes all the hard work out of choosing colors. As you paint with any of the tools, the software chooses the colors for you, based on the trace image. If you prefer to choose the colors, you can switch to the Normal Color mode and ArtRage has several color pickers including a Numeric Color Picker and the basic RGB and HSL color pickers.

With the Custom Color Picker feature, you can narrow your color choices in the color picker panel to a smaller group of colors such as complements, warm colors or cool colors. Finally, ArtRage comes with several preset Color Samples. You can even create and save your own custom color sets and color samples.

Now that we have our digital colors, we are ready to paint or draw. Each of the natural media art tools in ArtRage can simulate traditional art media including oil, pencil, palette knife, airbrush, chalk, glitter, paint roller, paint tube, felt pen, crayon and eraser. The realism and amount of custom control over the tool's properties such as wetness, pressure, hardness and angle, are surprising for the price. The natural media tools can also be used with the Metallic Paint option which gives a metallic characteristic to the media and to the canvas. In the Papers Settings Panel, you can choose a preset paper type and control several aspects of the canvas such as grain, roughness, color and opacity.

Another feature that one would expect in only high end software is layers. ArtRage's Layers panel rivals its competitors'. You can work on individual areas of your painting on separate layers. You can also copy, group and merge layers. Each layer has its own properties, such as opacity and blend modes, and can be moved, scaled and rotated. You can control the characteristics of the paper or canvas for each layer. ArtRage also supports transparency for layers, Photoshop's blending modes and has the ability to retain layer information when you import or export your artwork in PDS format.

The Stencil Picker is a very nice feature that can have many applications. The stencils and rulers work in three modes. In the Stencil mode, you can use the stencil or ruler as a mask to prevent paint from touching the canvas. In the Ruler mode, the stencils and rulers act as a combination straight edge and snap to function. As you move your paint brush along the edge of the stencil, your brush will automatically snap to the edge of the stencil giving you a nice clean edge. The Guide mode works like the Ruler mode but allows paint to spread under the stencil or ruler, giving a softer edge. ArtRage comes with a nice selection of preset stencils and rulers. You can also create and store you own.

Besides the built-in resources such as color samples, preset paper types, trace images, stencils and rulers, ArtRage comes with several video and pdf tutorials, sample paintings, quick start guide and a nice user manual.

I almost feel embarrassed to suggest additional features. But if I had a "wish list" for ArtRage it would include just a few things. For art media tools, I would like to see a watercolor brush and a drawing pen with a really fine point. As for new features, I would like to see selection tools and tooltips. Although ArtRage does have a multiple undo feature, it would be nice to have a history panel."

I should mention that the 3rd Edition, coming out soon, is confirmed to have watercolours.
